| Tunng – Soup Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Ha. I was wondering what they were shouting. | |
| Tunng – Sweet William Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Tunng have a few songs about death and killing, all sung beautifully. Until you hear or read the lyrics you think you're listening to a love song. I don't know if there's anything specific in these lyics, but to me they evoke a dark folk story much like Tale from Black. Maybe Mike just likes playing around with these themes? |

| The Last Shadow Puppets – My Mistakes Were Made for You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I don't know either but I do know this is a very captivating song - certainly my favourite song of the last year or two. Interesting way of looking at it. | |
| Cat Stevens – Wild World Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I don't doubt that the soung could be about Patti D'Arbanville, it could be about a daughter or it could be about any random parting. What Cat has managed to achieve is to capture the ambivalence of wishing a loved one well whilst suffering heartache at the same time. A couple of years ago I had a dream that when I was a child I was close to a little girl, and that she stopped being my friend because I was wanting to only be with like-minded boys. That dream left me very emotional and this song has much the same affect on me, especially all the references to "girl". Whatever he originally meant, he's managed to encapsulate the agony and denial of heartache beautifully. |

| Jethro Tull – Broadsword Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Disagree with the Saxon part, lillestat. The scene is probably set in celtic Scotland or perhaps a pre-Saxon area of Britain. The roundhouse is probably a broch, a sturdy stone-built shelter built to defend against invasions. There are still some standing today. Having said that, if it's pre-Saxon England then it's probably not Christian. So I'll stick with Scotland. | |
| Jethro Tull – Thick as a Brick (Parts 1 & 2) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Perhaps the lyrics are "all bull". Iain A has stated that the album was deliberately a send-up of prog rock culture yet this album is still hailed as a prog classic. Well, it is, of course. Nothing unusual in writers having a laugh in their lyrics at the expense of over-analytical fans. Genesis certainly did that and probably Yes too. Anyhoo - I love the music and I love the words. "I really don't mind if you sit this one out" says it all for me. Don't take it seriously, guys. "I may make you feel but I can't make you think" and "your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick" - so stop thinking and enjoy! |

| Jethro Tull – Cross-Eyed Mary Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Not sure about the reference to Mary, mother of Jesus but the posts all make sense to me. However, it's interesting that there are many many more songs written about "Mary" (or "Maria" etc) than any other name. It could well be that the name "Mary" has powerful connotations in our culture which link to the Virgin Mary. | |
| Jethro Tull – Seal Driver Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Interesting that a google search on "Seal Driver" turns up a type of machine tool, which can be made by hand/lathe if you have the right bits. I suspect this is Mr Anderson's sense of humour, turning the name of a machine tool (for a deisel engine???) into some kind of folk personification. He probably needs a seal driver to make sure his boat works OK. | |
| De Rosa – Camera Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Just discovered De Rosa. Why are they not more famous? Lyrics are difficult to pin down on this as with other songs of theirs. Probably the writer trying to get personal feelings into words, and consequently the words mean far more to him than to the listener. |

| Tunng – Jenny Again Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
When I saw Tunng, Mike introduced this as something like "It's about a man who has been murdered by his girlfriend's lover, also his best friend. But he doesn't hold this against him and wishes him a good life." I like these lyrics I because they run counter to the popular revenge theme that we would expect - perhaps the writer coming back as a ghost to haunt his killer and mourn the loss of his girlfriend. The second verse suggests that if all that life has to look forward to is formulaic existance of wife and two kids and getting old then why bother getting angry about an early death? |

| Wishbone Ash – The King Will Come Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Inspired by the Book of Revelation, not unusual as a prog theme. Don't think there's any particular message other than the prophecy that the world will end and following judgement, some will be saved. Genesis' Supper's Ready also being based on the same theme. |
|
| Wishbone Ash – Throw Down The Sword Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Nothing to suggest Englishness, however I'd agree that this song is basically about peace. Actually I'm reminded of the WW1 war poems of Owen and Sassoon. "The fight is done and over Neither lost, neither won" You can't win a war without some sort of loss, usually human life. "There were times when I stood at death's own door Only hoping for an answer" Holding on to the vain hope that there was something worth dying for. "A story time can never change" All wars follow the same pattern. |

| Black Sabbath – Paranoid Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"Make a joke and I will sigh And you will laugh and I will cry " Shows different meanings people make of the same event. Used it recently in an essay about paranoia!!! |

| Cat Stevens – Wild World Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| One of the best songs ever. For me it's about him wanting to let her go but finding it painful. He can't stand the pain and he projects it onto her, suggesting that she has to be careful out there in the "wild world". At the same time it evokes our own pain from childhood, when we lose our playful innocence. Our yearning for that repressed part of us is something we look for in others. But the memories are indeed our own. "I always remember you like a child". Not sure if Cat meant to have written about it like that but often the most powerful songs seem to draw on deep emotional issues which affect many of us. | |
| Maxïmo Park – Books from Boxes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Agree with those who say it's about a relationship that isn't happening. He wants to be closer but she's not willing to break up with her partner. Nothing has been said between them although they both tacitly acknowledge that they like each other and decide to write. Excellent song, with Johnny Mar style guitars. | |
| Tunng – tale from black Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is my favourite song. According to Tunng it's about a witch/hag/serial killer who lives alone in the woods. But either there's much more to it than that or it's meaningless like many other great songs (Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rapsody). Definitely the best song of the last few years by anyone. | |
| Tunng – Pioneers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think Bloc Party said in a live gig that it's about Leeds United. If so it seems as relevant now as when it was written!!! | |
