I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,

Bob Dylan – Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn) Lyrics 18 years ago
man there are two versions of this song. one of them is way boring. and slow the other sounds almost like him and his buddys are in a basement jsut messing around . and that is the best version. so much energy and raw talent. i love it.

i like the Jesus idea. i never thought of it like that before

i really like the phrase not my cup of meat . .. great

wow. red door really loves this song!

and i full agree. such a great song!

i kinda get the idea this song is about one last fling before marige. but i only say that because

Whoo-ee, ride me high
Tomorrow's the day
My bride's a-gonna come
Whoo-ee, are we gonna fly
Down into the easy chair.

Bob Dylan – Desolation Row Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow this is one of my top ten Fav Dylan songs

What I take desolation row to mean is a Bar. A seedy dive of a bar is a pretty run down part of town.
And more specifically the row of bar stools at the actual bar area is where the most low down sad depressed miserable people go to drink, hence desolation row.
So with that I feel the song is the story of this bar. Filled with all sorts of different characters. Who is more descriptive of their personality then laterally them.
Cinderella – a pretty girl who is working most of her life in the gutters.
Romeo- a hopeless romantic
Cane and Able – good and evil brother vs brother.
Hunchback of Notre Dame – an ugly person, outcast of society
Good Samaritan – a person who helps other people
And of course the list goes on and on but. Can you see how this whole song could be one night in a bar.
Its sort of like piano man but much more poetic.

Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill Lyrics 18 years ago
Now I don’t know if Good ol Peter is a Christian or not. But this song and “In your eyes “ really push me to believe that he went the way of the lead singer of Kansas and became a Christian.

As you may or may not know Kerry Livgren became a Christian and near the end of his Kansas career he wrote very Christian and biblical like songs “I want to know what love is” “Dust in the wind” so on and so forth. Not blatant “Jesus loves me this I know” but defiantly has that Christianity backing.

I get the same vibe from this song. I feel it is the story of him (or who ever the song is about) becoming a Christian. That sort of uncertainty an older person would have upon hearing the salvation story. And the excitement you get when you first really start to believe.
“I did not believe the information, just had to trust imagination, my heart going boom boom boom”
And of course the famous line “pack you bags I’ve come to take you home” “home” being his new Christian life. A symbol of leaving his old life behind.
I wont go to much deeper but other interesting lines
“My friends would think I was a nut” often the case with new believers who have non believing friends
“Turning water into wine” another metaphor for becoming a Christian
“I will show another me” born again perhaps. A new him.
“Ill tell them what the smile on my face meant “sharing his faith with his friends.
“Hey, I said, you can keep my things They've come to take me home” - accepting that earthly possessions don’t matter. When his road is now heaven.

This is what I got out of it and by reading all the other posts its easy to see that this song was written in such a way you can really get what you want and what is important to you out of it.

AMAZING SONG!
