This song is about figuring out how to live and how in the face of overwhelming uncertainty. The background music is meant to symbolize a sort of totalitarian mass that calls for you to fall in line with a pre-composed model of happiness, whether this call takes the form of corporate controlled culture (nautica) or hipster subversiveness (coolness).Ultimately, Lennox is saying that "coolness" is having the courage to be your self and do whatever you can to enjoy yourself. This is meant ironically, since "having a good time" cannot be the basis for a very meaningful life--yet it's the best we can do given the present circumstances. That to me is the theme of this album. |

I think it might be an Alice and Wonderland reference. A rabbit appears, he has to crawl ( as in underground) to reach it, he gets stretched out (turns big like Alice). The rabbit is symbolic of some unattainable prize he's pursuing, bu he t doesn;t knwo why he's pursuing it. (What is it? Who is It? Where Is it?) Just like Alice follows the rabbit because it's a sign of familiarity, this guy keeps following it even though he's aware that it's an illusion "all those who believe your eyes."
