The song starts by remembering the begining of a really intense relationship. The way she says "I felt you in my legs before I even met you And when I layed beside you for the first time I told you I feel you in my heart, and I don't even know you" is to show how intense the relationship right from the start. She was attracted to her before she even met her. The first time they were together Tegan admitted to her that she had like these really intense feelings toward her. This sets the song. It shows there was a seriously intense realtionship, that just died. It's over now for good. Also it just seems like they're not even going to be friends, which is strange, I don't even know why I get that impression though. I love the theme of love in songs, I love anaylsing songs/poetry in general and Tegan just writes so cryptically that it is so fucking tough to figure out what the heck she is writing about. But I do love to try. She is so emotional when she sings this on the DVD, and even live it's just such an emotional song I can't listen to it too much because it actually upsets me!!!! My favourite of the album I think. |

I don't think its about Tegan actually cheating. "I imagine you when I was distant Not insistent"-when she was distant, she pushed her girlfriend away and now she imagines what was going on with her gf at the time when she was keeping her at arms lenght, maybe she cheated on Tegan when Tegan was pushing her way. "I follow suit and laid out on my back Imagine that"-Either they both cheated on each other(but I don't think so), or else they both just pushed each other away from the other. "Nobody like to but I really like to cry Nobody likes me Maybe if I cry"-Crying to like show this emotion. Like when you bottle up feelings for a long time, or don't show affection, and then things get messed up, people don't know how you feel about them, maybe if you cry, just to show that you do feel something, that things are tough for you, just so you can convince somebody to come and love you. I agree with the first comment 100% I like how she "took the train back", but her partner said "you can't just hop a plane". Train=cheap transport Hop a plane=casually hoping a plane, even though planes are more expensive. Plane=rock star, too good for whatever. |

I think Sara is writing about Emy. "repeat the words that I know we both said" - I love you? "Relax into the need We get so comfortable"-passionless, going through the motions. "Remember when I was so strange and likeable"-Now the mystery is gone, Emy (I think) knows Sara (I think) so well that she likes her less, but loves her more. If that makes sense. "I just want back in your head"-I want to be the thing that fills your head, like the thing you think about all the time, the person/thing that occupies your head all day long. I think it is a two way thing. I think she wants to be back in Emy's head, but also for Emy to be back in hers. "I'm not unfaithful But I'll stray"-Sara wouldn't physically cheat, but emotionally maybe she pushes her away. She concentrates on other things, she basically does what she is saying in the chorus about being out of someones mind. It's the same idea of having something on your mind all the time, either a person or something else. She thinks about other things/or other people even, instead of the person she is actually dating. "When I get a little scared"-The scariest thing about a relationship.........You are so into a person, that you depend on them, they are 100% part of your life. You get to a place where it would just hurt too much to break up with them. That is very scary, but the worst bit is that the relationship is now missing the things that made it great at the start (That is why I don't believe in the union of marraige). But I think at the end of the day, a relationship at this stage, where the people are practically married without the legal binding contract side, is perfect. It's like anything, things change, and you want to go back to how you remember it. But you can't, and thinking about it will just drive you nuts. To get to a stage like this in a relatioship is amazing, and disecting the relatioship and concentrating on the past is not a good idea I think. This is just how I feel about the song. |
