Only discovered this band recently through Spotify. Love this song.
In my opinion the song is about a man who has lost a friend, a girl, with whom he was in love. So he is distraught, feels hopeless and contemplates suicide (or at least the nature of life and death). He wonders why he was invited into her life only to have her leave. He feels defenseless and numb because there is no fighting death.

Seems like a straight up lovesong. Not much to theorize about. :) Though beautifully written.
Red sun (warm, glowing) sky blue (trouble free).

I'm thinking it's about a situation where you're in a relationship where you're so intent on keeping it going that you're not thinking straight. You're not feeling or thinking, just reacting, holding on and keeping up appearances to the point of idiocy.

It could also be about humanity's need to feel secure, for protection. So much so that he produces nuclear weapons just to be able to kill everyone if necessary. The idea of "mutually assured destruction" is what is revolting... |

It's about a person wanting to retreat from humanity, to see shelter from what he ultimately feels is wrong. If nuclear weapons are one of mans great acievements, he wants nothing to do with humanity. |

This song is about the need to develop new technology and the inability we have of forseeing the consequences of these new technologies. We create vehicles to transport ourselves, but now that the rest of the world can afford these vehicles we find that they are poisoning the world. |

It's a view from the mind of someone in complete dispair. Someone who has lost belief in humanity. It's a song of depression. |

The song is about the downfall of civilization in the classical Roman sense. That we live in trance, believing in the word of the rich and famous, we watch murder and mayhem as relaxation. We deceive ourselves into thinking that we care about the rest of the world when we really don't. |

Everything ends, everything dies, nothing is constant. If you believe this, then there is very little that is scary in the world. Even the monsters of the world will go away with time, their legacy forgotten. |

As so many of Covenant's song, this song is about breaking conventions, to rise above the normal, to shine, albeit briefly, in the eyes of everyone. |

The longing for adventure, to live each moment as if it was the last to remove that which makes us safe and to walk in the storm. Being hurt means that you feel something, to be safe is to be numb. |

So the song is a plea for individuality, to be allowed to seek ones own path and a warning not to stand in the way. |

The song is about individuality, in the mind of Swedes. Sweden is a very liberal but socially concious country. Among the first countries in the world to embrace "fair use" and one of the last to outlaw it. At the same time we do not like that which sticks out. To take up room is to disrupt and that which hurts our sense of equality must be levelled to the ground. |

I think the song is mainly about the little voice in the back of our minds that tells us to stay safe, not to take any risks so that we will not be hurt. It's the restraint we put on ourselves, not that which is put on us by others. Hence the "feedback"... |

I do like the lyrics. I like the meaning in the song, he's trying to comfort someone who is sad and who wants to withdraw from reality. Accept that the world is an illusion and there is no reason to withdraw.
But I must say that the lyrics are also technically not so good. They don't really fit the song (too many syllables here and there).
Nevertheless, Ronan is a very good poet. |

| VNV Nation – Carry You Lyrics

To me, this song means exactly the opposite of what most people here have concluded. Most interpretations here are that we must "dump our baggage" or "get rid of" the bad things from our past.
What he says is the opposite. Everything you've experienced is what you are. All your unwanted memories are actually making you the person you are. They "carry you". Accept them, don't drop them. Relish even the bad parts of your past and you'll find that all the energies in the universe will carry you.
I can't say I feel this way myself, carried by the universe. I'm not a big believer in spirituality. But I do believe that we must accept what has happened. The past cannot be changed except through our interpretation of it. |
