man...nobody's commented on this song yet? This is one of my favourite George Strait songs. Troubadours were composers of songs or poems who flourished from about 1100 to about 1300. What I gather from it, is that he's saying even though he's getting older, he still fondly remembers his young days and still lives them. As far as the second verse goes, I'd say that could be interpreted as when you look in the mirror, it only shows you the outside, (face value) of a person, and doesn't show their personality. The song as a whole I think is about life's journey, and about how everyone is always on one continuous trek that never ends until you're 6 feet under. I can feel what George is singing about...I'm going to be 23 soon a senior in college, and boy do I miss being 18 and a senior in high school...best times of my life. |

No one can dispute the religious nature of this song...that's def. one meaning. If you listen closely, I think you can get a second meaning out of the song of drug addiction. The long black train and the devil are a person being addicted to alcohol and/or drugs. "that train is a beauty making everybody stare but its only destination is the middle of nowhere" ^People who abuse alcohol and drugs often glamourise their use, and think they're not doing anything wrong, and that "everybody's doing it." When in fact, addiction to even the most mild substances such as caffeine, is a sad sad thing, and that destination of that Long Black Train is indeed the middle of nowhere God helps those who help themselves |
