at the screening of Rian Johnson's The Life of the World to Come film in NYC, John said that the animals--in verse order--are the Tasmanian Wolf, the dodo, and the golden toad.
he also said this is one of many songs that is an autobiographical kernel hidden beneath layers of figurative language (my words, not his).
like much of the album, it's sad and gorgeous. |

Now regardless of lyrical content, the first thing that sprung to MY head was how much better depressed, fucked up writers are than joyous, rapturous ones.
Perhaps as a result of Rapture doing some muse-raping.
But again, that's without taking into account all the literary allusions in the lyrics. |

In the album's liner notes: "we used our own friends names at the end of the song for the couples shout out but in the time it took for this record to be released they all split up."

David is David Eisenbach, a teacher at Manhattan School of Music (or whatever it's called, heh). At the beginning of the song, she sings "hcabnesie", his surname backwards. :D |
