This is about a relationship that doesn't work out. After it comes to a bitter end, the self-destruction begins. I used this song recently when my girl left me. She left and I went into self-destruction mode. I tried everything and I gave up. I smashed myself to pieces because I didn't know what else to do. Thing is, now it is hard for me to trust...even if someone gives it to me...I throw it away. Who is this person I have become? I almost hate myself for what I have become.

This songs starts off somewhat pleasant. Finding the girl you always wanted. Then you start doing serious things that ruin what you have. The girl leaves and eventually erases you out of her life and memories. I think with whole "use you, scare you, break you"...I don't think Reznor actually did these things. I think he feels that way because she left.
Meaning, I had a great girl come into my own life. We got serious. Too serious for her. She left. She is erasing me from her life and her memories. I can't help but blame myself. I feel like shit and feel like I used her. I scared her. I broke her. I didn't feel that way when we were together. But I now blame myself and wonder. |

This song is about turning into God. In the first verse, Reznor talks about putting the spirit in his body. He does it in a sexual/dirty kinda way. God is using him as a messgenger and taking him from the inside out. God is conquering and pretty much raping Reznor. Furthermore, haven't you heard the phrase "I am a vessel for God"? That's where that comes from. The beauty of Reznor's musical creations is that you can visualize what he wants you to with sounds. If you listen, you can see the ship or vessel being powered by people paddling in the bottom of the ship. |
