I think "So I dropped out of high school and got a job selling phones at the mall." Is a really nice line. From other songs we can gather that cell phones are a negative image and that, coupled with dropping out of school, quite nicely kicks off the deterioration of this person's character because of TMWTPS. |

I think you could be right, but he's calling himself a neon rat, and it sounds as though rats symbolise an unsavoury person in other songs. Personally, I think he's a "rat", a cruel, unsavoury person who's having his way with Esmerelda. Because he's a "rat" he sees splitting the couple up and the husband being heartbroken as entertainment, as if it were a soap opera. |

I think it's about how we all fuck up and make huge mistakes but pretend it isn't happening, even though we all know it's true. Maybe the kids on the coca-cola billboards and women on vulture-wing rafts trying to escape, even though the sea keeps on rising represents how we're trying to save ourselves with the things that got us into trouble in the first place, or how we try to compromise and how it never works. Or something. |
