| Beck – Sexx Laws Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Another brilliant double meaning lies in the title of the song. The two x's at the end of Sex are parodying the use of "X" to mean "Adult," but they also imply an "XX" chromosome, adding another layer to the description of "Sexx" Laws as "Gender" Laws. Long story short, Beck is awesome. |

| this song, like a lot of air songs, treads a dangerous line between corny and beautiful. which, in this case, is a compliment. at their best, air trumps all else. | |

Love the album. Beautiful atmospherics. Although the lyrics border on pretentious at times, M83 strike the right balance on this record... except for the stupid monologue on this song. I can only reassure myself with the thought that it's almost certainly tongue-in-cheek. This doesn't make it sound any less idiotic. The lyrics are about the worst perversion of the goth subculture, but the music evokes everything that made 80s goth phenomenal. What a horrible conflict of interest. (p.s. before anyone attacks my comment: yes, i understand the intentional irony of this song's juxtaposition. i'm merely expressing my view that the lyrics come close to ruining the mood of the song. it's hard to take such beautiful and gothic atmospheres seriously when the lyrics clearly don't) |

Personally I think that Adhils Arboretum was the worst thing of Montreal ever gave us. If anything I'm nostalgic for the days of The Gay Parade. But your opinion is very valid. I could see why a fan who was drawn in by Adhils Arboretum would be completely turned off by the band's new direction. |

Yes. I've been thinking the same thing. The majority of the album seems to glorify Georgie's sexual exploits, but after declaring that his thoughts are "from a foreign host," Kevin seems to denounce his Georgie Fruit persona. This song and "Beware Our Nubile Miscreants" seem to be a critique of sexual promiscuity. I could be reading too much in. After seeing this album performed live, Kevin Barnes clearly is still comfortable with in-your-face sexuality. |

| of Montreal – Feminine Effects Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Has anyone seen Steven Sondheim's Company? The phrase "Bobby, baby" is a recurring musical and lyrical motif throughout the whole show. Just thought this was worth noting, considering how theatrical Kevin is. Also, interesting how the words "feminine effects" appear elsewhere on Skeletal Lamping (on the song "Plastis Wafer"). And how the "eagle-shaped mirror" apperas on both "Women's Studies Victims" and the b-side "Alter Eagle." Funny how this whole project is intertwined. |

| oh, and i LOOOVE the slow breakdown. and then it stops. and it comes back twice as fast with the layered vocals. ahh this song is brilliant | |

Beck is as talented a singer as anyone else on the R&B scene. As for the lyrics of this song, it's just more of Beck's skewering of filth. I love it. "I'll do your laundry, massage your soul I'll turn you over to the highway patrol" I love how Beck is able to take stereotypes of the music scene and completely mess with them, while creating amazing music at the same time. And his dad isn't dead. I'm pretty sure he was credited with the string arrangements on Guero. And personally, I think Sea Change is a respectable record. Nothing stands out too much, but it's a very enjoyable listen. |

| Beck – Sexx Laws Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I agree with namesake. For the longest time, I just figured this was another one of Beck's bizarrely filthy songs. And the verses definately support this. But the chorus was DEFINATELY written to imply a double meaning. Also, his way of spelling Sexx with two x's gives most of us the image of dirtiness. But in a biological interpretation, XX simply refers to gender (you're so clever, Beck!). To reiterate what namesake said: I want to defy The logic of all sex laws ---Forget about gender rules Let the handcuffs slip off your wrists ---Free yourself from society's restrictions I'll let you be my chaperone At the halfway home ---You can escort me, even though society says not to I'm a full grown man But I'm not afraid to cry ---I can show emotions (which is "effeminate") You have to remember that at his core, Beck is a satirist. So even though he's embracing the over-sexed dance culture with this over-sexed dance song, he's giving a critique of it at the same time. |
