It's about infidelity. She's in love and having an affair with a married man or, possibly, she is married to an unfaithful man that she loves beyond reason. I think the lyrics hold up better w/ the former but both work. The song in a nutshell from that point of view: You pretend that this infidelity doesn't hurt me and that I don't know you're unfaithful. I maintain the illusion that I don't know. I despise myself for this but I love you beyond all reason and I know you love me. Although I tell myself this but the bitterness of reality hurts me a great deal. I pretend that you don't know this hurts me. If I wait long enough the circumstances will change so I am patient because I love you. |

The idea that it's about a rape is interesting but I think it's more straight forward than that. Someone broke into her apartment and left her near death/dead.- Someone who loves her comes in directly after and called EMTs.- The loved one is panicing and desperatly trying to resuscitate.- The loved one is in shock and begging her to reply.- The cops are asking what happened and the shocky loved one repeats "I don't know" over and over. The end. I agree that Michael is one effed up nutter but a *talented* nutter. |

It's all about sex and sexual confusion. Possibly the woman in question enjoys receiving anal sex. When he finds he enjoys this he's convinced it makes him gay. Possibly he has a fascination with being a "receiver" as opposed to a "connector" or she convinced him to have a threesome with another man. He is assured in his heterosexuality and has found his faith shaken. There are sexual metaphors everywhere but the best one is the reference to Doris Day. Her name is synonymous with Rock Hudson because they were always paired together in romantic comedies. Rock was a deeply closeted homosexual. |
