| The Stone Roses – Love Spreads Lyrics | 6 years ago |

The lyric in the second verse is "Too much to take Some cross to bear I'm hiding in the trees with a PYGMY She's over there, yeah" And it refers to Luke 19:1-10 the story of Zacchaeus the Tax Collector https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+19%3A1-10&version=NIV "He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him," |

| Led Zeppelin – No Quarter Lyrics | 8 years ago |
This is about giving your soul away in battle. Its a remorseful song about war; 'no quarter' means it means 'no surrender' or 'fully committed'. It sings about 'no mercy' given or taken in a war. This is why it sounds so bleak. Ask a soldier. |

| Sweet – Blockbuster Lyrics | 8 years ago |
Hard to believe this classic is hasnt got an interpretation yet. AFAIK its (famously) about the Blitzkreig on London in the 1940s - especially the V1/V2 rockets fired by the Nazis. Buster = rocket 'Ahh-ahh' lyrics = air raid sirens The rockets were not precise and hit civilian areas to massive effect hence the despair. The people are shouting 'Buster! Buster! Block Buster!' to their goventment. Unfortunately the rocket flew faster than any airplane and couldnt be caught by Spitfires or Hurricanes. They devastated London and randomly fell on civilian areas. The middle eight part with the dum-dum-dum-dum drum and bass section is meant to evoke the bombs raining down on the populace. They werent dropped by bombers so couldnt be intercepted. An old man in a pub told me that spitfire pilots used to fly toward the rockets and shoot the wings off because that was the only way to stop them. Ultimately this song is about the despair caused by bombing of civilians. It should by listened to (and enjoyed) by this generation and each one that follows; play it for your kids and explain it to them. Its a genuine masterpiece; if not musically, then artistically. |

| The White Stripes – My Doorbell Lyrics | 9 years ago |
@[oJUSTSKATEo:17889] Yeah, I think so. In fact I think the whole album is about faith. I think the line 'I've been going to mystery misses, I respect the art of the show' should read 'I've been going to mystery Masses, I respect the art of the show' I think this refers to Jack attending an old style Catholic Mass - a much more ornate affair than the modern Mass - and he 'respects the art of the show' ie he understands the importance of spectacle and image when presenting an idea. Or, No matter how good the idea; presentation augments. JW is an artist and one of his greatest muses is his Catholic faith; The Mass has been a great source of reflection, contemplation and inspiration for artists over generations from James Joyce to Salvador Dali and, within his milieu, I'd have to put JWs output close to these guys. So, yes, I think the 'friends above' refer to spiritual/religious figures. (PS - I have no idea why people think a great number of songs on Songmeanings - JW and otherwise - are about sex. I guess they are the people who arent actually getting any....) |

| Fat White Family – Hits Hits Hits Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| Song is about Ike and Tina Turner and their 'fractious' and allegedly abusive relationship. | |
| The Commodores – Nightshift Lyrics | 9 years ago |
The second verse, while referring to Jackie Wilson, also refers to Jack Kennedy and his assault on racism in US Universitys - http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/jfk-faces-down-defiant-governor - hence the 'You lifted us higher and higher' lyric. A very clever song that - like many of the greats it refers to - works on many levels. As an aside... both Marvin Gaye and Jack Kennedy died in tragic circumstances. |

Whatever its about it relies heavily on John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." |

Isnt this just the 'Hail Mary' set to music by a load of lapsed-Catholic Mancunian rockers? Fairly obvious I would have thought..... |

| Grimes – Oblivion Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I'd be inclined to agree that its a song about a girl walking alone at night/ physical insecurity but the coming off drugs thing also rings true. To be honest, I'm not bothered that much what its about but as a 40-something year old father of kids I have to say that both myself and my wife havent heard a tune this fresh, catchy and different in a long, long time. This kids has talent, I hope she goes a long way. For those who are interested in an old boys ramblings there are shades of early Depeche Mode and Human League in this song. Lyrically its structured (I'll be shot for this, I know) very like 'I Think We're Alone Now' by Tiffany. And neither of those comments detract from this song, incidentally. |

| Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer Lyrics | 13 years ago |

To all, Rarely will you read an interpretation as concise, intelligent, pointed and thoughtful as the one posted by ectnvb. We may disagree on the muse, but we agree on the masterpiece. Isn't this what music is about? |

| Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer Lyrics | 13 years ago |
'All you do is call me, I'll be anything you need' 'If you show for me, I will show for you' Yeah, right, its about sex. Its obvious. And obvious is what you are all comfortable with. Nice and obvious. C'mon people! Seriously? A late 30s rock star, with a private education is singing about sex? Really? You believe this? Look at his age, look at his education look at his background. Thats not what this song is about. |

| The Stone Roses – The Hardest Thing In The World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I always thought this was a song about being depressed/ having a depressed friend. The 'hardest thing in the world' is picking yourself up and getting on with life. I'm pretty sure the line is 'Come awake, I know your world wants you around'. |
| Portishead – Wandering Star Lyrics | 14 years ago |
To my mind this song was always about fighter/bomber pilots dropping bombs on people. The 'wandering star' was the airplace seen from the ground. The 'needles eye' was the bomb sight for aiming. The 'masks that the monsters wear' were the pilots facemasks. The song was by a survivor of the bombing grieving for someone lost in a bombing, cursing the pilots. The song was written around the time of the first gulf war. |

| Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Cant believe what people are writing about this song. Sex? Total nonsense. Listen to the lyrics. 'I've shed my skin' - so what is he now? 'This is the new stuff' - the new what? 'I go dancing in' - who goes dancing in? What does he say after 'Why don't you call my name?' - What name does he call out? I mean ffs its fkn obvious what he's singing about - 'Why don't you call my name' 'Put your mind at rest' 'This will be my testimony' 'Let there be no doubt about it' Its a song about Gabriel reaching a more...... reflective stage in his life. |
| The Stone Roses – Begging You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
You forgot the last two verses (my interpretation follows) The way you say it, is it all in a name? 'Cause he'll call you, he'll maul you, and drive you insane and he'll make you remember, time is in place, how I fell for you. I'm Begging you. The god of the whole tree told me that he got it and he knew what to do with it everybody saw it, saw the cross that he made, (make all the dust that/pray for the cross cause) you can. (make all the dust that/pray for the cross cause) you can. King bee in a frenzy, ready to blow...... Clearly its a coke/messiah song. Not the first, either. |

| U2 – If God Will Send His Angels Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The last bit of the song - "Jesus never let me down you know Jesus used to show me the score then they put Jesus in show business now it's hard to get in the door it's the stuff it's the stuff of country songs but I guess it was something to go on" Should read ".... it's hard to get in the door So step, step up into his arms but I guess this is something to call you" Its obsecured by a sound effect but you can still hear him say it. Also as noted above its not 'scat singing' at the end, he sings pretty much what the poster above says. |
| The Boomtown Rats – Banana Republic Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| "Its a pity nothings changed".... says it all really | |
| The Stone Roses – What The World Is Waiting For Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think the song is about self-realisation and being happy in yourself. Not needing to conquer others to find happiness. The song refers directly to the musical theatre production 'Stop the World - I Want to Get Off' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_the_World_-_I_Want_to_Get_Off). In it a man plans his success and searches for something better than he has but, after all his greed and ambition, realises that he had all he needed in the beginning to be happy, he just didnt know it. |

| Arthur And Yu – Afterglow Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Verse 3 line 3 should read - "mosquito got caught up in the sap" Great song. Great album. Great band. Great future. |
| The Stone Roses – Standing Here Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The song starts off singing about the Sermon on the mount given by Jesus (blessed are the the meek etc..etc..) - the usual Roses/religious imagery. I'm sure the line in verse #3 is not 'over me my free fall baby' its 'Oh reap my fruit, for life it is (beautiful)' A juggernaut is a hindu God not a truck. The song seems to be an early incarnation of idea that 'the kingdom is all inside'. |
| Fugazi – Exit Only Lyrics | 18 years ago |
exeunt is a stage direction which means (they) go offstage. As in 'Exeunt soldiers and townspeople.' Sympatric means 'Occupying the same or overlapping geographic areas without interbreeding.' I guess the song is about leaving the stage and meeting up later - at the exit. 'leave the last place burning' - was it a good gig? |
