I also agree with sheafrances, but have a few more interpretations to add. The repeated lines: "If every angel's terrible Then why do you welcome them" are the foundation of the song. It is a question to any man who stereotypes women with negative traits; if women are so bad, why do you need them? The next lines refer to what a man expects of a woman, especially sexually. The phrase: "You say you'll provide the birdbath/ If I provide the skin" is like a fucked up, poetic pick-up line. She is just a pretty body (skin bathing in the moonlight), submissive and without confidence (trembling like a kitten). I think the Jim Morrison line is actually a reference to the Doors movie where Val Kilmer as Jim is getting head in an elevator from a groupie/model. It might mean something more, but I think it's in there just because it sounds like it fits. The last verse is my favorite. It's a very poetic metaphor of how a man finds comfort at the end of the day in a women. Like a child he is frightened and disoriented by the world (supermarket) and takes solace in a women (mother) who makes him feel safe ("Boy don't she feel warm tonight"). Anyway, great, honest song. |
