This song, like the Alice books themselves, probably has a lot of interpretations. The lyrics and the tune are eerie enough. That's another thing - this is called “Looking Glass”, like "Through the Looking Glass", but the story being described is "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", the prequel, and there are deviations (the flowers in the garden were no help, say) Is it really just a summary of the books? I'm not sure; there's probably a message, especially in the last stanzas. Could the looking glass be describing just that – a mirror? “And life will always get twisted/ When you're living it through the looking glass” Vanity. “Lose your youth, cause beauty is truth/ It's just harder to swallow” Lose your youth for beauty – children, little Alices, race to become the beautiful men and women of the world. |
