Talking Heads – The Book I Read Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it's literally about a book. I think the book is a metaphor for a person. Maybe he talks to her on the phone through another friend or something, and then meets her himself, only to realize it's the same person. He loves her, and he's imagining their future together. Maybe he's "running a race" meaning competing for her with some other guy - possibley the friend who he originally met her through. I know it's out there, but that's my idea.

Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime Lyrics 18 years ago
Sorry I keep posting, but I forgot to mention in my theory that the repeating of "Same as it ever was" is meant to show that everything has been the same the whole time, despite the false life with the "large automobile," "beautiful house," and "beautiful wife. The individual was simply sleeping. And also, I didn't mention that I don't think it has to do with money, because (usually) you won't be getting a beautiful wife by paying money.

Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime Lyrics 18 years ago
All of the possibilities suggested are definately at least that - possibilities. Some of the interpretations were very inspirational, I found, but I just don't agree. I have my idea, you have yours. But the song is left wide open, so that the imagination has more work to do, and that is just the brilliance of the song.

Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime Lyrics 18 years ago
I have listened to this song numerous times, trying to solve the mystery of the water's meaning. I have devoloped my own opinion, but am still unsure as to where the water fits in here:

An individual is "living in a shotgun shack." The individual falls asleep, and finds they are "in another part of the world," if you will (which, to me, means living a completely different lifestyle than they are used to). The individual is now "behind the wheel of a large automobile" and "in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife."

And the person says, "How do I work this?" because this is not a lifestyle that they are used to. They are confused, and say "This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife !"

After some time, they grow accustomed to this lifestyle, as is naturally human to do. But then the individual awakens from this dream, and is now unable to connect to reality. The person says, "What is that beautiful house?" upon the realization that it is only "a shotgun shack." Now unaccustomed to reality, the individual asks themself "Where does that highway go?"

Unable to differentiate between reality or a dream, the individual asks themself, "Am I right? ... Am I wrong?" And then, burdened by this, and unsure of their place MY GOD !...WHAT HAVE I DONE ?
