to me this song is about someone who feels that he is never adequate. "He tries to please them all This bitter man he is Throughout his life the same He's battled constantly This fight he cannot win" To "please them all" is of course something that can never be accomplished. You can please everyone else but yourself or you can please yourself but not everone else. It will be a never-ending struggle for nothing. "And quickly he's subdued Through constant pained disgrace The young boy learns their rules" He has come to feel inadequate because of the way he was raised/through expectations from society and through making the decicions that were expected of him. "What I've felt What I've known Never shined through in what I've shown" He has done as he has been told to, not what he wanted to. Even though he had a feeling that it was wrong and he knew that what he was doing was not actually what he wanted (tries to please them all) and therefore his true feelings never shone through. Somewhere along the way he vows to himself that he won't wind up where he can see that he is heading. He vows to start making the decicions he wants to. "A vow unto his own" and "never free(?), never me(!)" But they take away his will to become what he wants to. "His will they'll take away" In the end he is a bitter man for not fighting hard enough and he dies regretfully. Regretting the life he has led and that he was not able to change to become himself. He "won't see what might have been" "Never be Never see" If you never really "are"(live) then you will never really "see" (the meaning of life?) "You labelled me I label you" I don't really know what to make of this. But I guess he sees himself as a product that was just labelled as any other product is. Therefore he labels the "labellers" that labelled him. "So i dub thee unforgiven" Who is the Unforgiven? You tell me! To me it seems like it is either himself for not trying hard enough, his parents for labelling him and making him a product, or society in general, also for making him a product. As with every great song it can have a thousand meanings, but this is my take on it. Hope it sort of makes sense =) |
