Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always heard this was about masturbation but didn't really believe it... but after reading the lyrics... WELL COME ON! it just fits. Idunno.. I could be wrong, and in all honestly, if you're told a song is about masturbation (or anything else for that matter) that's what you are most likely going to see when you try to figure out the meaning. But.. it does seem to fit.

Devo – (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction Lyrics 17 years ago
BRILLIANT!

a great cover of a great song... this is how covers are supposed to be done. what makes this awesome is that DEVO has taken an already popular song and really made it their own. otherwise what would be the point? I don't even feel like i'm listening to a cover as this is DEVO through and through.

X-Ray Spex – Oh Bondage Up Yours! Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with asstronaut et. al. that this song is primarily about consumerism... But I would take it a step further and say it specificly refers to consumerism within the punk scene and the punk "uniform" of bondage pants and spikes etc. By the late 70's, merchandisers had begun to capitalize on the punk phenomenon (Malcolm McLaren & Vivienne Westwood, anyone?) and you could go into some stores and purchase ripped shirts, collars, and (of course) bondage pants.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band – Moonlight On Vermont Lyrics 17 years ago
"Old Time Religion" is an old gospel song... Maybe, Captain Beefheart did choose to modify the meaning, I don't know. But those lyrics are from a traditional Christian song, not from Beefheart's imagination. Perhaps they're meant to be ironic?

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band – Dachau Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
It's really hard to appreciate Beefheart's lyrics while listening to his insane (yet awesome) music. After reading this, Dachau Blues has taken on a whole new level of brilliance for me.

I would agree with the previous comments; Dachau refers to a Nazi death camp and this is most assuredly an anti war song:
"the young ones now beggin' the old ones please
t' stop bein' madmen
'fore they have t' tell their children
'bout the burnin' back in World War Three's"

I don't usually go for weird or avant garde music, but something about Trout Mask Replica... idunno. The Captain's a genius.

Butthole Surfers – Cough Syrup Lyrics 17 years ago
fruity guck makes perfect sense.. it's wrong. but id does make sense. more sense than the actual lyrics, in fact.

also... its genius, not genious. and an inquisition is a question...he didn't ask any questions.

Bob Dylan – Don't Think Twice, It's All Right Lyrics 18 years ago
perhaps this has already been said, but its late and i dont feel like reading ALL of the comments on this song. i just wanted to get my 2 cents in...

anyways.
it always struck me that this song has an extremely bitter tone about it. i mean, if i had to sum up this song in just one word, that would be it: bitter. thats the one word that comes so readily to mind.
he really loved this girl, and his love was never reciprocated. and now its over, and hes walking away, and hes just extremely bitter about the whole thing. his tone almost verges on sarcasm as he tries to play the macho, stoic role. hes saying "i dont care, anyway"
lines like "we never did too much talking anyway... you just kinda wasted my precious time... dont think twice, its alright(of course)" show how he tries to act hard about it, when its obvious that he's, in fact, really hurt and really bitter about the whole thing.

The Rolling Stones – Mother's Little Helper Lyrics 18 years ago
what a wonderfully witty song.
anyways... i think most everyone on here has missed the point. i mean, obviously and unquestionably the song is ostensibly about a housewife using prescription drugs to "help her through her busy day." probably valium, as stated and restated, numerous times already. but thats not the point. it doesnt matter what pill she was popping.

to me this song points a finger at the hypocrisy of "straight" society. this song was released in the mid sixties only a year before the summer of love. at the time a lot of young people were experimenting with marijuana, lsd, and other psychedelics, as well as hard drugs like heroin, speed and coke. and straights would call them druggies and stoners and potheads, etc.

the stones are basically responding to those accusations by highlighting the fact that "normal" people used mind altering substances too. only they were more acceptable because they were doctor prescribed, even though they had the same mind numbing effect as "drugs of abuse". the only difference was (and still is) public oppinion.

anyway thats my take on it. maybe i'm wrong.
