Actually, the lines "It's so plain for me to see; my only weapon I call poetry" is one of my favourite lines from the entire song. It's obviously about Tiananmen Square, but I think that it uses that incident as a metaphor for standing up. I love Rancid for this, they have the most intelligent lyrics of any punk band out there, save perhaps The Clash, as freehat117 pointed out. In another Rancid song, "Start Right Now", they have the line "Machiavelli owns a machine gun now"..brilliant, really. |

Any ideas as to whether the laughter at the beginning carries any significant meaning? It's a good introduction to the song, though. I must say, I never thought of it as being about a prostitute, but that idea really does fit the best. |

It's about the commercialisation of everything "my giant hit discotheque album", and growing up in the suburbs, how depressing it all is "hearing that noise was my first ever feeling" |

This is my favourite song, ever, period. The way it's sung was so sincere, which is exactly what this song was about. Commercialisation, problems in England at the time, particularly in the punk scene, and yes, they were taking a jab at the Sex Pistols. This song epitomises not only The Clash, but the era itself for me like no other song can. |
