| Dashboard Confessional – Keep Watch For The Mines Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think it goes "You are bound to get your own back stabbed" instead of "arm back stabbed." :) This song makes me think of someone I know who gets in these moods sometimes where no matter what you say, she tells you you're wrong, and she says it with this smile and this laugh, like she thinks she's being funny, but it actually hurts. And when you try to explain yourself, she won't let you talk, she just talks over you, keeps telling you you're wrong. "The ditches and the trenches and the smiles of the gravediggers." She just wants so bad to bring you down, and smiles while she does it. "Web of contradictions" because she could just as easily say the same thing you just did, but no one would put her down for it. I guess "keeping watch for the mines" would be trying to avoid getting in those situations, avoiding saying things that would give her ammunition. That's what it makes me think of. Like most Dashboard songs, I'm sure it can be interpreted in a million different ways. |

Even though he wrote this song for Madi, it kinda means something different to me right now... I just ordered all my high school graduation stuff, and I feel way old. Not to mention my dream is to be a musician of some sort, so this song kinda feels like a young musician's plea to the public, or a record company, or anything like that, and he can "see why you'd pick them over me, they all got big trucks, big subs, and I'm not eighteen." And the line that goes "that guy, he's the cream of the crop, and when you think about me, your heart will stop" is directed to the public, like "someday, I'll be huge, just you wait." Just what I thought of the first time I heard it. I absolutely love this song. |

I definitely think it's a song to God. It's just got so many clues. "absolute beauty and measureless grace"... "in earlier days, they'd persecute people, carry them off, and hobble their legs"... I mean, if anyone's read the bible, that definitely fits. Also, the phrase: "So, hand me the rocks to help weigh me down And tether my legs with a cord tightly bound To the end of an anchor thrown into the sound And test me to see if I will rise against the worst that it can get" definitely seems to be referring to Matthew 18:6 in the King James version of the Bible: "but whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Also again in Mark 9:42 and Luke 17:2. Some strong similarities there, don't you think? And yeah. The singer/Chris, can't literally hurt God, physically. But the things he did could be disapproved of by God, and he can hurt other people, which also makes God, generally perceived to be a compassionate being, hurt. I know at least on the iTunes page for this song, it interprets it as being about God. Probably in other places too. Personally, I didn't like this song for a long time because it was religious. I didn't really want to deal with it, maybe I was afraid of it. But since then, it's really grown on me, and it's such a great song. There's really not a reason why you wouldn't like it if you gave it an honest chance, unless you're atheist. Which is cool, don't get me wrong. Maybe this song is just about a girl for you. Thing is, this song doesn't really belong to any specific religion, it can work for mostly anybody, I'd imagine. |

I know, but I swear, that's what it sounds like... "victimous." You kinda get what it means, though. I mean, it's not the first time an artist has made up a word, right? Not saying it should change, though. "victim less" makes sense (although it's kinda the opposite of what "victimous" would mean) and is probably correct. I guess we'll find out? |

I agree with ThisFarthestThing. Unfortunately I have never heard this song, *cries*, but from reading the lyrics, that's what it sounds like to me. A suicide. "He never said help, he never said anything"... "It's only in this silence that I can hear he'd been screaming all along"... "maybe I should wear makeup, it seems to have worked for him." That is so sad. If anyone has this song and feels nice, could you send it to me, along with any of his other rare non-released songs you might have? My email is on my profile. Thanks! |

Bridge: "Listen to yourself, there is a hemorrhage in your mouth, it won't stop bleeding" = the other person can't seem to stop dropping accidental hints about what he/she has done? "You may be the trigger" = you might end up being the reason people find out about this, "but I will hold the smoking gun, you'll get away clean" = but I'm willing to take responsibility from it. "I'll keep your secrets until the grave has swallowed me" = I'll never tell anyone your secret (obviously) "and I will never tell a tortured soul there burning by my side that I am a sinner, I am a savior, I am a lie" = and I'll also never tell anyone that I make mistakes too, but I'm trying to play the role of savior here, and that it makes me a lie. |

Okay, to me, it sounds like there are two people: the singer, and another person. This person did something bad. The "crime." Drugs comes to mind, but only because of the line "only trace amounts left in your blood," but really, that could just mean that the effects of whatever this "crime" was, and how they're wearing off. The singer knows his/her secret, and, in verse three, he is willing to take it to the grave and protect him/her at all costs ("I will hold the smoking gun, you'll get away clean"). In verse one, he basically says "You know what I think about this. You really didn't do anything that bad." And the chorus says "Just don't let this get out, and it'll be okay." In verse two, he's kinda worrying, trying to tell himself that it wasn't his fault, reassuring himself that even though he's a "sinner, it wasn't me this time" and wanting his/her "council, thick as thieves," more reassurance that he is not to blame. The song kind of carries a "hey, it wasn't my fault!" vibe, but the singer is still willing to protect his friend and try to make it all better, because he doesn't want it getting out, likely because he is afraid that he is somehow at fault. That's my take :) |

Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but... I think in the second verse ("I've heard enough of your forked tongue...") it's "I know you like your stabs" instead of "steps." It seems to fit better, IMO. Anyway, this song in incredible! To me, it's about someone who projects all of their problems onto other people, maybe unknowingly ("How can you think that your crimes are victim less?") (Although when I listen to it, I swear I hear "victimous," leading me to think that the person the song is about thinks that they are the victim, instead of the one committing the "crimes.") It's about someone who refuses to take responsibility for what they do, rationalizing everything they do, and they "ought to know better" than keep dodging the consequences, because they will eventually pay. ("when your lies unwind?") Also, the line that goes "We all pay in time, so how will you clear your conscience when your clock unwinds?" is painfully clever. I love it. |
