I first heard this song and I thought it was alright. Maybe because I wasn't in a situation where I could fully understand the meaning of the lyrics. Then life became harder and I had more responsibilities on my shoulders. I now understand what I means to try your hardest and hope for the best. I'm just amazed by the amount of determination expressed in this song, with the quote: "even if it takes my whole life/to get to where I need to be" It's very encouraging and I'm glad I learned to appreciate it . Also, on a funny note. I driving home one night, and my friend called me. He was lost and he needed directions. And I was actually playing "Trying" and I heard the lines "trying to find my way"...I laughed so hard hahaha. |

In my opinion: This song is about leaving one's hometown due to various reasons. Note that the lyrics says "I just wanted to hold you in my arms". This line is in past tense, meaning this individual once loves a girl but she doesn't feel the same way. She eventually faded away "if you promised me not to fade away". Again, past tense. Now this individual cannot live his life in his hometown which is filled with memories of his infatuation. Therefore he decides to leave this place "Far away, this ship is taking me far away, far away from the memories, of the people who care if I live or die". As he departs from his hometown, he sings this song in memory of his family, friends, and the woman he loves. The Starlight represents the idealistic love. He will be "chasing a starlight, until the end of his life". He hopes to find another woman to love and hopefully she will love him back this time. He is an optimistic individual, and thus the B major key. This song also reminds me of a story of my friend. He used to love a girl, she loved him also; but her parents did not approve. He became very depressed for more than a year, and I suggested him to move away from the city. He did not have enough money, so he stayed, but still depressed. About a year later he found another girl but she didn't treat him too well. He is now still depressed due to various reasons. When I fell in love to a girl, she said she'll love me as a friend. I then realized that I've been used as the joker teller, or the funny guy in my group of friends. It was always the case, but I'm fine with it, it's part of my personality. But during that particular month, I really wanted to move away to Australia, or New Zealand. This is why I interpreted this song this way. Hopefully it all made sense. =] |

You idiots. Y'all missed the point of this song. Seemingly the theme of this song is about "fear", some of you refered to Syd Barret, well that's incorrect. The theme of this song is climbing the ladder of the power structure. The lyrics shows the benign indifference of Pink Floyd toward power, rules and attempt to achieve the ultimate freedom - being indifferent.
