I'm an atheist, and even I absolutely LOVE Sufjan Stevens. I even like the album Seven Swans. Anybody who criticizes him for having some Christian elements in his music is an idiot. He's not preachy at all, and his Christianity, to me, adds an extra layer of beauty to all of his music. Whether his beliefs are right or not (I think not), they still play a very important role for me in his lyrics. |

I fucking love this shit. It's pretty rare that you find a good song w/ no rhythmical structure. Songs like that really get to me. "No More Sorry" by My Bloody Valentine is similar: it's poetry recited over music w/ ambiguous rhythms. It feels so...organic. |

This has already been said, but I'll say it once again: it's SCAR, not STAR. As blindie said, it says so in the cd booklet.
Anyhow, this song is so fucking beautiful. The first time I really payed attention to the lyrics and what they mean...it hit me pretty hard. |

I saw this on 100 Greatest 90s songs, and the singer talked about the meaning. He was in a bar with his friend, Mr. Jones (idk his first name), and they were fantasizing about how easy it would be to talk to women and get laid if they were rock stars. Hence lines like "When everybody loves me, I will never be lonely". |

For some reason, I love songs that have lyrics that are hard to understand but are sung really euphonious. Some people get annoyed with that; for me, it just makes it more mysterious. |

Actually, the "Blue Bus" is an allusion to a personal experience with him and his friends. It's almost an inside joke.
Supposedly, there was an actual blue bus that Jim used to ride to the beach with his friends, and that's what he is referring to. I think I read that in an interview with Jim.
And the whole "kill the father, fuck the mother" thing was definitely an allusion to Oedipus.
Personally, I think this is more of a dark nostalgia thing: he's looking back on his life, using metaphors and symbolism to describe events and feelings. |

The first time I heard this song, in Snatch, I had no idea that it was not modern. I thought it was like a late-nineties song. IDK why. Maybe it's his voice, which to me sounds pretty today-ish.
I didn't know the song was about heroine, but in retrospect, "it's not as if it's incon-fucking-spicuous, now is it," in the words of Brick Top. |
