from a religious viewpoint i think this song is about trusting in God in a world that isn't as nice as you would like it to be hence the line "i know there’s no such thing as safety but i know what a promise can do" the promise being salvation |

this song just reinforces the fact that thrice are amazing musicians and dustin is a lyrical genius. that being said i think there are two ways to look at this song the first being about breaking away from oppression and the second being breaking away from the oppression of sin |

besides being about the recording of IOS i think this song is about true friendship and how truly genuine people will always be there for you no matter what hence the line "helping words aren’t always kind" well theres my two cents |

My gosh i can't even try to explain what this song means to me but I'll try anyway..
I think everything leading up to the last chorus is about being lost and hopeless in sin or whatever you can relate it to in your life and then in the last chorus brings hope back into the picture.
Also i can't even begin to say how good of a songwriter Dustin is and how great musicians these guys are |
