Of course we’re all reading this because we love the song, and have all been so inspired by it. So many of the lyrics ring true, but these are my favorites. I have squandered my resistance For a pocketful of mumbles, Such are promises All lies and jest Still, a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest. To squander your resistance… to lose your self-esteem, pride, dignity… all for nothing. Such a profound commentary on how we treat one another. The fruitless and meaningless promises we make to each other, then immediately forget; yet how the other person can put so much faith and hope into what we say, only to be let down. And we hear what we want to hear, even though our intuition warns us otherwise. |

| I believe this song is about the life stages we all seem to follow…what is interesting is we all tend to go through these stages at approximately the same ages. As teenagers we long to find acceptance. In our early twenties, we long for love, but then in our late twenties we long for freedom, etc. So an elderly person’s life/psychology likely followed similar courses as our lives are or will. | |
