Meat Puppets – Oh, Me Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's interesting someone brought up a connection to cocaine. I personally believe this song is about being God-like delusions, delusions of grandeur, whatever you want to call it. He's saying, I can be this "human" you want me to be or instead I can sit here in my mind and occupy myself all day. With the affirmation of realizing "I'm fucking infinite so I don't need you." I would like to add that these delusions were probably facilitated by copious amounts of acid. The Meat Puppets were well known acid consumers. I know that Curt said you have to be on acid to understand/like their first album, which I have never done and, coincidentally, I hate it.

Meat Puppets – Two Rivers Lyrics 16 years ago
The sound captures water perfectly. That is to say the sound of Cris and Curt Kirkwood, not a huge Bostrom fan. All I can say about the lyrics is Curt was probably on a lot of acid.

Steely Dan – Deacon Blues Lyrics 16 years ago
While I think these are all good interpretations, I think that this song is more about the songwriters expressing a mood they were in. I think it is a melancholy view of their lives up to that point. They have constantly tried to find a new "home" but are always discouraged by their experiences. If any interpretation of the song should be made I think it should be that it's about a rambler's futile search for a "home".

I put home in quotations for a reason: to draw emphasis on the connotations of the word rather then the denotations.

Steely Dan – Time Out of Mind Lyrics 16 years ago
A few things, both Fagan and Becker were narcotic users but neither have had a dragon tattoo. Also, this song was written between 78-80 (I'm not really sure which year I just know those were the years that Gaucho was being recorded), not the late 60s or early 70s. I also, don't believe your explanation for chasing the dragon as it is commonly known that to "chase the dragon" is to smoke heroin. The only other explanation I found likely here was by aic22.

Your other interpretations of the song I also fear are wrong. The line "water may change to cherry wine" is simply a way of saying that once the user has "chased" that the miraculous (see John 2:1-11; AKA Jesus' first miracle) will happen; that things that are bland will turn to grand. Your explanation of "silver will turn to gold" as the visuals to a heroin nod (I thought "trip" was inappropriate to describe a heroin experience) shows you don't really know what heroin (and all other opiates for that matter) is about. The visuals produced from opiates comes only after heavy consumption and is marked by a silver lining and things seem to have a touch of gray (this is why I think "Touch of Gray" by the Dead is about Garcia's heroin addiction). This line is again just another way of saying that after "chasing" the user will experience miraculous changes in perception and feeling. "The light in my eye" is not at all about the look in a junked up person's eye. If you have ever seen anyone on a downer of any kind you will know there is absolutely no light in their eyes, especially someone on heroin. People who are high on heroin look like death. This line is saying that chasing the dragon is the light in his eye, or his reason to live or his inspiration to get him through the day.

Also, your spelling is horrendous.

Warren Zevon – Frank And Jesse James Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is more about making fun of those people that idolize Jesse James. You have to understand that Warren's sarcasm comes in huge abundance but is always subtle.

Warren Zevon – Carmelita Lyrics 18 years ago
I am pretty sure the song has little to nothing to do about the rock and roll lifestyle. Warren only tried heroin once and it was a long time after this song was written. I believe it is more of a dark parody of Los Angeles and the junkie population.

Warren Zevon – Lawyers, Guns, And Money Lyrics 18 years ago
The Honduras part was actually lived out before this song. The short story writer O. Henry did the same thing. He embezzled some money and went to Honduras to escape. He later returned to be with his dying wife and served time.

Also, I have always heard the story of this song as Warren adding the "and guns, and money!" part, not his manager. His biography, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, says the same thing as well.

The Slip – Even Rats Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song isn't "clearly" about anything. I think the key line is "I hear the words but the meaning gets lost." It refrences to different things going on in the world but always seems to disregard them with a random phrase; "good home cookin'" "you can have my stereo" "I hear spring is nice in Canada". Everyone is so caught up with what is going wrong and what needs to be changed that where's the time to relax? The speaker seems to be explaining this that "even though the race may never be won" (ie the bad will never go completely away) there is still the good in life that we must appreciate. So, pretty much, I agree with neotemplar.

Also, I don't think people really listen to the music. It is more than just the lyrics. The sound supports my idea more than any political one.

Finally, gay marriage? If you stretched Stretch Armstrong that long I'm pretty sure he would break and that disgusting ooze would spill out. I mean, come on. I think anyone with a brain can see that cannot be the meaning.
