| k8tie, it made me think of Plato, too! Now I know I'm not crazy. I've always been curious if they were intentionally alluding to Plato's cave or not. | |

I see this as a more subtle version of "The Rebel Jesus" - a critique of organized religion and the hypocrisy of organized religion vs. spirituality. Houses= churches, organized religion; fire = dogma. (stuck inside your houses, walls are burning, roads are filled with homeless souls who have no idea where they will go) water= generally in stories and poetry is a symbol for transformation/rebirth, with baptism a version of that. Here I'd take it as a symbol for spirituality. |

| Bon Jovi – Shot Through The Heart Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| With the mirror line "shot through the heart" and similar themes, this song almost sounds like a sequel to "You Give Love a Bad Name". Anyone know of BJ meant the two songs to be companion pieces? | |
| Jackson Browne – Tender Is The Night Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I read this song as the difference between ideal love and real love - the daytime represents perfection and the ideal, what we're always told love is by unrealistic songs and stories love should be, whereas the night is the time the couple can drop that and just be themselves, and forget about the fights they have during the day. | |
| Josh Ritter – Wolves Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I feel it's not just temptation or jealousy, it's both these things and other things. The wolves are all the doubts and problems and negative things in a relationship. "I started listening to the wolves in the timber" when he starts listening to the doubts in his mind. "Then winter came and there was little left between us Skin and bones of love won't make a meal I felt my eyes lifting over your shoulder There were wolves at the edge of the field" -Winter just means any hard time, here, probably a time of financial difficulty. The wolves come closer, all he has to do is look away from her for a moment. "One day I just woke up and the wolves were all there" - his doubts are everywhere. At the end of the song he's lost her and he's made up only of his doubts, all the negative things. |
