i get the feeling there is something about acceptance here... although i definitely agree with the spiritual awakening thing... i have always felt that about this song.... but just thinking now, if you look at what "MelissaOK" said about the contrast of "catfish" and "gospel" suggesting in memphis there is something for everyone, from the pious to hedonistic, this seems to be backed up by: "And Rev. Green be glad to see you When you haven't got a prayer But boy you've got a prayer in Memphis" No matter what you do, who you are, you are accepted by someone in Memphis (maybe a metaphor for the kingdom of God maybe not) |

i vaguely agree with the above comments... i would just like to add: "From the corpes flowers grow" seems to be a direct or an indirect reference to T.S Eliot's The Wasteland. This, in the poem serves to suggest, that first death must occur for beauty to spring. That from the ruins of a life beauty and nature are reborn. If anyone can link this to the song then.... good, my work here is done! |

well seing as lycanthropy is the transmutation of a human into a warewolf, it is about patrick become his true self or at least the search... And i believe he is saying that search for the true pure soul includes getting rid of all outside influence and hinderance. he seems to suggest a strength in self soothing: "you were once so weak till you sewed your wounds up" there is a not only the sense of immunity... but also the connotation of unatural sterility... the bleached chemical induced bareness of an operating theatre? hence why such brutal in human imagery is applied to his transfiguration into the real wolf. "hairy skull of stubborn fire"... to me this song says... he searched for the strength in self solace... and found it but paid the price of sterility... both social and sexual. this probably incomprehensible twaddle but it makes sense to me and really speaks to me! |
