| Noah and the Whale – Give a Little Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
They're definitely trying to convey the message that you can't be loved without loving first. It sounds like he is trying to tell an ex-love that he can't love her because she doesn't love him. Hence "If you give a little love, you can get a little love of your own." |

| Noah and the Whale – The First Days of Spring Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The first days of spring represent regrowth. Like the flowers and trees that begin to grow again on the first day of spring and will soon bloom again, he is starting over after "fucking up his life" with what sounds like also ruined a relationship. He is waiting for the girl that he loves to come back, but he will be ready this time, because he is turning over a new leaf and starting over, becoming a better man. The posters before are spot on with this being mindblowing. That second verse is so powerful. These guys really do have a magical way of putting feelings and lessons learned into lyrics. They put out one masterpiece after another. |

| Carter Hulsey – Black and Blue Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I feel like this song is all about a couple who have gone through a few rough patches, but have so much love invested in one another, and are certain that the other is meant for them, that theyr'e willing to fight through the pains to see the good times. | |
| Carter Hulsey – Black and Blue Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I think it's needles. That's what I've always heard, and it makes sense, needles used in stitching up a wound. | |
| Dan Wilson – Sugar Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Just looking over the lyrics and listening to the song once, it seems like this is about a guy asking a girl to forget about the future and just be with him for now. She can leave him one day to fulfill the life she has ahead, but he wants to be with her for now, and he just wants her to remember him as the guy he was when they were together. | |
| Lady Danville – Bed 42 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I'd have to say this is about a missed opportunity with a girl. They keep referring to being late and off on the time. It's all about bad timing and how the narrator is having trouble moving on because of what could have been with this girl. | |
| Lady Danville – Cast Away Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
At first I thought this song was about trying to be in a relationship with someone, but still loving someone from the past. After listening a few times and reading over the lyrics, I think it's more about two people together, but one has changed. The narrator is saying that he would give his heart to the new person, but he already gave it to the old one, and he would say "I love you" to the new person, but he's already given those words away to the person they used to be. In the end, it's about the narrator's struggle between urging the changed person to either stay with them or go (cast away). |

| Esterlyn – Kill Your Own Despair Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Despair: A feeling where all hope is lost or absent. The title says it all, the lyrics back it up. You can rid of your own depression. This song is about opening your eyes and dealing with the issues at hand, as opposed to closing your mind and sinking in your hopelessness. |

| Story of the Year – Anthem Of Our Dying Day Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| On Saturday I was on a plane on its descent when this song came on shuffle. We were landing in Philadelphia airport and I can honestly say that the city lights burned like 1000 miles of fire. I just wanted to share that and the fact that this song still affects me some way even after listening to it for a few years. | |
| I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody's Business – The Best Happiness Money Can Buy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think it's just about making the best of your youth while you have it. "Time goes by, And we watch our lives, As they're sadly slipping away. Alone, we cry." "So follow that tune quickly Or you'll lose the melody you never heard" I love the latter verse. To me it means live your life to the fullest so you don't look back wishing you'd done more. |

| Jason Mraz – I'm Yours Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"I’d been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer My breath fogged up the glass And so I drew a new face and laughed" The old myth that when you lie your tongue changes color (you may have heard a parent/grandparent say it to you when you were younger). So basically what I get out of these lines is that he wasn't sure if this was a lie. He was doing anything he could to see things clearly, but it was still foggy. So he just started over and let it all go. |

| E For Explosion – Closer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The part "when the light floods in, will you hold me close?" I think what he means is "when the morning comes will you still be holding me" considering the rest of the verse is about sleep and dreaming. Also the last verses say "you won't sleep alone" he'll sleep with her. | |
| Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
What if you look at it this way... I think this song is about the lead singer trying to live a good, moral life where as everyone around him is having fun and leading the life of sinners. "Do you believe you're missing out? That everything good is happening somewhere else With nobody in your bed The night is hard to get through" In the above verse I think he is saying that he is missing out on the fun everyone is having. He is allowing his Christian morals to limit him. He can see the barrier he has set between his friends and maybe even a certain girl. "And I will die all alone And when I arrive I won’t know anyone" When he says this, I think he means that when he dies he hopes to go to heaven, but believes all of his friends are going to hell for their sins. This way, when he arrives to heaven, he won't know anyone. "Jesus Christ, I’m alone again So what did you do those three days you were dead? Because this problem is gonna last More than the weekend" The wall he has set between himself and his friends makes him feel lonely. When he says it will last longer than the weekend he means it will continue his entire life. "Jesus Christ I’m not scared to die But I’m a little bit scared of what comes after Do I get the gold chariot Or do I float through the ceiling" Right here he is flat out asking if he is living this moral ife for nothing. Will it pay off when he dies? Will he ride a golden chariot to heaven? Or will it just be over? "Or do I divide and pull apart Cause my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark This ship went down in sight of land And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?" By dividing and pulling apart I think he means just to give up, forget religion, forget the morals he has set for himself. "My bright is too slight to hold back all my dark", this is saying that the good side of him isn't strong enough to restrain him from the things he really wants to do. Then the relation to the ship going down means that he gave it his all trying to fight the urge to sin, he was almost there, but in the end he fell to do it. "And at the gates does Thomas ask to see my hands?" All of his friends are sinners, they are most likely known as sinners, and becasue he is friends with them, he may be thought of as a sinner. In the New Testament, John 20:24-29, St. Thomas the Apostle doubts Jesus's resurrection and demands to see the wounds on Jesus' hands before being convinced. This can relate because the singer is trying to live a Christian life, but many people probably doubt this because of the people he is assosciated with. "I know you're coming in the night like a thief But I’ve had some time, O Lord, to hone my lying technique I know you think that I’m someone you can trust But I’m scared I’ll get scared and I swear I’ll try to nail you back up So do you think that we could work out a sign So I’ll know it's you and that it's over so I won't even try I know you're coming for the people like me But we all got wood and nails And we turn out hate in factories" This is where it all breaks down. I think this part is mainly about him questioning his faith, not only in religion, but in himself. Jesus is coming to judge him, and talking about his lying technique he is saying that he can trick not only Jesus, but he can decieve others to make them think he is this perfect person that he no longer believes he is. "I know you think that I’m someone you can trust, But I’m scared I’ll get scared and I swear I’ll try to nail you back up" He says that he seems like the trust worthy person that he used to be, but inside he knows that person is gone. Also with this he is losing faith in Jesus saying that he will nail him back up on the cross. He then asks Jesus if they can work out a sign, something that he can see when he is dieing to know that Jesus is taking him away to heaven, and he can rest easy and die with confidence of going somewhere better. I know you're coming for the people like me, But we all got wood and nails, And we turn out hate in factories" Jesus is coming to take the people like him to heaven, but everyone has hatred inside of them, even the singer. By using the terms wood and nails, I think he referring back to saying he would nail Jesus back up on the cross. I agree with the fact that these hate factories are churches. The Christian Church wants us to follow the life of Christ, but when people fail to do this it drives them to hate themselves for being a sinner. This could be a reason many people give up on religion, even if God will forgive us for our sins, we ourselves still know we commited them, and we may push away our faith to feel better. |

| The Maine – Undressing the Words Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think this is about a guy who isn't sure if he is infatuated with or really in love with a girl. It seems the versus keep going back and forth where he will say she isn't the first he has felt lust for, but then he contradicts himself by saying: "Oh there's a lot more to it than this I'm not just tryin' to get in your bed" That's just how I understood it. |

| Ice Nine Kills – The Greatest Story Ever Told Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
At first glance, you will see that a guy stole his girl away from the him, and murdered her. After examining every line, this part may stick out. "But the truth is that I never committed the crime Cause I could never hurt a fly Then how’d she lose her life? You're In denial" right here he says that it wasn't him who murdered her because he would never hurt anyone, but then follows it up telling himself he is in denial. This would mean the rest of the song the threats are directed toward himself, an act of suicide is soon to follow. Another possibility for the above lines would be that he feels he is responsible for what happened, he blames himself for not holding onto the girl while he had her. He allowed her to drift away and this man killed her. Another way to look interpret the murder of the girl could be to think that her death is really only in his eyes. He lost her to another guy, and he is going to kill the man because of it. So when he denies his innocence, he is telling himself that he is not guilt free in the story, maybe his actions drove her away, maybe he beat her. This song could be interpreted in a few ways, these are just what I saw in it. |

| Deas Vail – Shadows and City Lights Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Seems like its about a relationship that's been patched together numerous times and is finally ripping apart at all seams. | |
| I Am the Avalanche – Clean Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
After looking at the last verse some more, I feel as though he is calling out for Jesus. With all the wrong in his life, he thinks he lost his guide. "Jesus christ i need you, I need you now. or anyone who feels like helpin out" He needs Jesus right now, he is lost and unknowing what to do next. I think the last line he is questioning his faith. I am a Christian, but I will say it. He is saying in one line: If Jesus doesn't exist, whatever divine guider is out there, I need you. |

To me is seems like the guy has messed up a fair share of things in his life. In the first verse he is talking about a party the girl threw for him. He was telling himself that he earned it, even if only half heartedly, but deep down the two of them know he deserves nothing. Another thing that comes to mind is that the party could just be a reference to their relationship, he doesn't feel as though he deserves her, and she knows this. The second verse to me is a single metaphor, just bear with me. "spill out my chest onto paper for a check" -He is putting his entire heart on the line, for this relationship, which he refers to as a check. "that we cashed too soon" -Cashing the check, the check is now gone, terminated and never to be seen again. He did something to end the relationship. "and now the government is on my stoop" -The girl is being referred to as the government, after all, she is on the other side of the transaction (relationship), and being the only one that could go against him when things go wrong. I'd really like to have the band tell us what he means in the last verse, is this a faith thing where he feels Jesus has left him? Or is Jesus Christ just a phrase to express his anger towards and longing for the "you"? |

| Northstar – Blind Crush Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| sounds like a potential relationship that never worked out. When he first met her he was sure she was the one, but then it never happened, and she moved on, while he was left there only to think about it. | |
| School Boy Humor – Pinky Promise Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Just found this band, I really recommend the song, "Hey Miss Wright". The meaning is laid right out in front of you, a guy is just explaining to a girl how she is perfect, and he will never find another like her. He wants her to promise him they will be together forever. Really beautiful song, just the way the music comes together with the words sounds incredible. |

| The Hoodies – A Year To the Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The meaning of this song is pretty much laid out in front of you. A guy and a girl were together, and exactly one year ago they separated. Now the guy is stuck between wanting her back or forgetting she existed. He recalls the good memories, like them "laying under the night sky", and how when together they claimed it would never end, "you and me, we'll never die". Now he realizes that the whole time it wasn't real, he was living a false reality, he makes the reference to heroes and dragons as they are mythical, just like the two of them were. "And now the scent's returned" He is going back to the thoughts of trying to fix the relationship. "Snow has thawed, I have learned, what's too good to be true most always is" But since they separated, its easy to see that it was too good to be true. Their infatuations with each other were being compared to snow, which covers the ground (the truth). "I've got to get out..." He needs to forget it ever happened, or else he will be stuck looking back his whole life. He says "keep this for your scrapbook of memories, take it out and remember me someday, and know I've never changed". If she has a memory of him without thinking of him all the time, it's inevitable that one day she will consider going back to him, and he wants her to know that he will always have love for her if she chooses to love him in return. The last verse is him going back to wanting to get the situation out of his head, he wants her to completely forget about him, act as if he had died. |

| Dear and the Headlights – Run in the Front Lyrics | 18 years ago |

basically what rag said... "manager said I can't make just one more mistake" having this girl and career at the same time is just too much, she interferes with his career, and his career interferes with her. He had to make the decision and went with the job. |

| This Providence – Picture Day Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| a guy falls for a girl, and just obsesses over her. the rest of life seems unimportant, he just thinks about the girl. he is afraid to show his feelings for her, and just keeps them hidden, but not having her is killing him inside. he will just wait around for her to show feelings toward him, and that hope is all that keeps him going. | |

| We the Kings – Skyway Avenue Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Two lovers who are so caught up in love, that the rest of life is completely disregarded as long as they have each other. They would die together, just because, together they feel they are truly alive. | |
| We the Kings – Check Yes, Juliet Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| like forward thinker said, the song is about 2 lovers who want to be together, but everyone else doesn't want it to happen. The song is comparing it to Romeo and Juliet, where the two feuding families would never allow Romeo and Juliet to be together. | |
| We the Kings – Secret Valentine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The guy is hanging around, infatuated with a girl, passing time until she finally notices him. Great song! | |
| Always Rushing By – Show Them Something Sweet Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Here is what I got out of this song: Starts with a breakup... "It's just so me to air our bad news What's passed has passed Plus, you've changed your tune It feels so good to sing something new I've exhausted every word on you now" They discover each other again, and see the possibilities. It's described as "perfect" and "simple". The writer knows it will not work out in the end, but he goes out on a limb and takes a chance..."I've dropped my guard, I'm taking chances Fingers crossed, I won't regret this now" In the end, he sees it will fall apart, especially when he says, "I could hold your interest for about a day", he knows its a short term thing. He knows it wont last, but doesn't want her to think he is worrying about it, "I'll never let you see me sweat Cause it would be giving too much away" but he wants to cherish it while it lasts, "I'll only let you read my lips When I say get close before this is too late" |

| Always Rushing By – Say Anything, Say Everything Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Why hasn't anyone commented on this? It's too bad this band broke up, they were something special. I spent some time trying to figure out what this meant, all I can come up with is a guy just stuck on the thought of a certain girl, wondering if she feels the same way about him. He says "we say hi to say hi" which leads me to believe they are just acquaintances. THen he says "We know there must be more to our lives" so he wants to be more than just friends. Thats just what I get out of it. By the way, all of their songs are available for download on their purevolume account. |
