The rational and irrational parts of the song being sung/spoken at the same time is really powerful in outlining what rabbithowl has said about this song. The actual man in this situation isn't thinking about either the rational or the irrational parts, he's thinking both. He knows that things must be simple and that what he's being told by media is incorrect and spectacularized, but he's still not sure what it is, really. This is a great song. |

| Gang of Four – Contract Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I mostly agree with RdeC. The repeated line "is this so private/our struggle in the bedroom" gives it away. The struggle they're having is in reconciling the reality of each other's bodies with the ideal they've been presented in magazines. The struggle is 'public' in two ways- one, that everyone is struggling with the same wild expectations and the gaps between them and reality. Two, the subject of goings-on in the bedroom is very popular. That kind of cements it for me, at least. I think the jibe about 'contracts' is underlining the fact that relationships and sex in our culture aren't seen so much as outgrowths of love but power or money or something else entirely unromantic. It also might be an expression of frustration, like "are we making love or is this some sort of business ritual?" |

| Cake – Jolene Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think the bitchin' jam session at the end of the song is what happens after Jolene takes the plunge into the outside world- it's crazy and all over the place but still essentially groovy and far cooler than the first part of the song. McCrea screaming 'get down' at the end probably means Jolene's old life is catching up to her and it's now screwing up the speaker's life as well. The live version of this on the I Will Survivse single is probably the best thing Cake has ever recorded. |

| Cake – Haze Of Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The up-and-down tempo of the song and the interspersed guitar, along with the progression of time, is pretty much spot-on as far as what the actual experience of working through a difficult personal problem at obscene hours of the morning is actually like. | |
