this song is about addiction "when you come back to me, you will be on your knees" if you've struggles w/ addiction that line resonates loudly. it hints at the point when an addict decides to use or abuse again, very haunting |

| rockstar: i can agree to some extent w/ you abt it being a close personal friendship type thing but i honestly think its about a failed relationship. i've been thru something like this and both my ex and i agree that this song relates completely to what happened to us. we were engaged, she cheated on me..."i think i wanna know his name" & "whose gonna b at your bedside" no doubt in my mind | |

It's definitely about Chris McCandless/Alexander Supertramp. "He tore our images out of his pictures" etc; is explaining his resentment for his father & family(his dad led a double life w/ 2 wives). The Laika reference is explaining how Alex's mom should've just named him Laika b/c he would never come back from his "great adventure" just as the Russians knew the dog Laika wouldn't come back from outerspace. "don't die or dry up" is absolutely about Alexander...he starved to death in Alaska, hence he actually dies and in his death he actually dried up (weighting in at something like 70 lbs when actually died). "alexander, our older brother" pays mention to his younger sister Carine whom Alexander had a real affection for. "If you want something, don't ask for nothing If you want nothing, don't ask for something" is speaking to the fact that Alexander wanted nothing from people but everything from life; he hated material things but wanted to live life to its fullest. Thats why he deserted his family, gave his trust fund to charity, and set out on a great adventure that took him from the continental US northwest up to Alaska where he met is eventual death. The outro with the neighbors dancing in the disco lights is the realization to Alex's parents being notified by the police of his death & the neighbors dancing in the disco lights b/c Alex and his family, particularly his dad always had problems and had the police over there quite regularly. I and all those who argue this point have read one of the best books in history; "into the Wild" by John Krakauer and it is soon to be a feature film made by Sean Penn. Read that book and get back to me. |
