| Ben Folds – Hiroshima Lyrics
|
Yeah, this literally happened. But I'm also sensing that there's not so much a metaphor, but more another layer to the song... the idea that when you're well-known or famous, you do get put up on a pedestal. And when you fail, the entire world is watching you fail.
The "what's in my head" bit kinda follows that, in the way his fans want to know what's going on in his head. So Ben is being very tongue-in-cheek and saying "You wanna see what's in my head? Well here you go. Here's some pictures of the inside of my head."
This song is awesome :-) |

Ooh. I just read on Amanda's blog that she HAS had an abortion, so I take back what I said. I still stand by my theory on the song, though. |

Wow, you folks really need to stop your foolish arguing.
Has anyone mentioned the fact that the Amityville Horror house was situated on 112 Occean Avenue?

| Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I understand that it's about her finding an excuse for her promiscuity, and deciding that it must run in the family after having looked at her "friends'" inherited mental/physical disorders (I put it in quotation marks cos, who knows, they might not exist).
I read it in an interview she gave in Rock Sound magazine.
Based on that, I'm pretty sure the word "folks" is used as a hononym (sp?). |

| Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
For some reason, whenever this song is in my head, my brain sings it as, "You're got the music / I guess that's the point of it all..." Not sure why. Sounds pretty though. My brain also seems to think the first line is, "Oh what a noble distinguished collection of freshwater friends you have made..." Again, not sure why. :-)
The drug addiction interpretation is the most obvious... which is why I'm not sure I agree with it. But saying that, I can't figure out an alternative explanation.
The needles/sewing imagery kind of reminded me of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter, but I hope it's not about that. I really hated that book. |

| The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics

Hmm. Much as I like the hours-per-menstrual-cycle explanation, I'm gonna disagree, because I'm thinking that if Amanda really had an abortion, she probably wouldn't talk about it the way she does (e.g. would she really write songs likes "Mandy Goes to Med School" or "Oasis" etc?), and because it doesn't really match her usual style of expressing such emotions.
I think it's more likely to be an apartment number/car number plate/area code/phone numbe/etc of a person.
The last line, I'm not too sure it's meant to be taken ultra-literally... but it definitely shows a sense of guilt in some form; like maybe this 672 person was someone she committed crimes with (drug use?), cheated on a partner with, was a girl, etc etc etc. Who knows.
I also once heard a theory about a 672 being some kind of aeroplane...? |

| Rasputina – A Retinue Of Moons - The Infidel Is Me Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
Not long ago, I was incredibly drunk and incredibly tired and "A Retinue Of Moons" was in my head as I was trying to sleep, and I became convinced that it was about how we have technology to control our surroundings and make life easier for us, but we still can't control the weather. And then I began to get really scared, as I tend to do when I'm wasted and thinking about music.
Exactly how correct that interpretation is, I really could not say. I think the "Microphone will listen for thunder..." bit was in my head or something. |

| Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics

I agree with the video game interpretations. The song seems to me to be about how video games imitate life, and the chaos that ensues when life imitates a video game.
I'm interested in why she stole the chord progression etc of a Queen song. "Killer Queen", right...? I get the importance of the word "killer", and the fact that it's another nod to British music like in some other songs on her album ("Oasis", etc), but is there another reason I'm overlooking? |

| Rasputina – Cage In a Cave Lyrics

I'm guessing this song may have something to do with Osama Bin Laden - comparing him to Fletcher Christian or what have you - because of the references to the caves, and also the song "Choose Me For Champion", which I understand has bits from a speech he made.
Malora Creager is so clever... her songs are full of really interesting imagery. |

I'm not sure, Makis. It just seems to me that if that was the point of the song, Voltaire's doing it a little too subtley. But meh, who knows.
I think this was the first song I ever heard by Voltaire - and to this day it remains my favourite. |

Wow. I really hope the commenters at the start of this song spent the last seven years untwisting their panties.
Seriously. This song is about a particularly mean cop who Matt Skiba had a problem with. One cop. I sincerely doubt he's criticising the entire police force or instigating a discussion on the 9/11 attacks.
Cool song. :-) |

I think this one's basically just about being away from the girl he loves, and saying that he'll reach her again through radio waves or something. It's rather beautiful, this one is. :-)

| Jack's Mannequin – Dark Blue Lyrics

I've heard the thing that some of you have mentioned, about the blue light bulb, and that's gotta be true.
I know that this song is actually about relationships and sex and separation, etc, but whenever i listen to it, it doens't mean that to me. Usually when singers tell you that you're not alone, i just think, "Oh, f**k off, what do you know?" but when Andew sings it, i believe him.
"If you've ever been alone, you'll know dark blue." |

| Jack's Mannequin – La La Lie Lyrics

|
I doubt it's about his friends lying to him in a bad way, or dismissing lying friends or anything, because if you read the credits, he's got a bunch of his friends playing the instruments for it. I agree with earlier comments that it's probably about his friends saying things to make him feel better, which he thinks are lies.
But personally, i can't see how it would be about gonorrhoea... ;-) |

| Björk – Bachelorette Lyrics

I love the title of this song... i can relate to it so well. To me it seems to be looking at love and relationships from a very self-centred point of view (i don't necessarily mean that in a bad way), which, being kind of a loner myself, i can understand. It's about the rush of feelings, good and bad, when you love someone, but the title shows that in spite of it all, you still feel alone. |

To me it sounds like a the dark side of a fairytale. Obv the lyrics aren't exactly about that, but the music, and the words they've chosen... yeah, it's pretty awesome. |

I totally agree with the above comments, it definitely sounds like a loss of innocence to me. I think the "cut me and it feels good" lyric is a sort of foreshadow into the child's future of sick thoughts.
(Not that sadomasochism is particularly sick or anything... i just think that the way Martin sings the words makes it sound like a sick version of it.) |

I agree with Dullahan. It's about being obsessively in love with someone and FEELING like a stalker, i think. I get the impression that it's maybe about seeing someone after they've broken up with you and you've realised how much you like them... i don't know.. |

This song's beautiful. It weirds me out how much his songs seem to reflect on my own life in really weird ways - like the line, "...into a shallow world of painted girls and marionettes" - shortly after a relationship of mine ended, i took to living statue work (painted girls) and wrote a song called "Marionette".
I have to see this dude play live some day... although it just might kill me like it did you guys at the top. ;-) |
