Murder by Death – Another Year (Amanda Palmer cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
This is an Amanda Palmer song - did they cover it? I know the two toured together.

Ben Folds – Hiroshima Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, this literally happened. But I'm also sensing that there's not so much a metaphor, but more another layer to the song... the idea that when you're well-known or famous, you do get put up on a pedestal. And when you fail, the entire world is watching you fail.
The "what's in my head" bit kinda follows that, in the way his fans want to know what's going on in his head. So Ben is being very tongue-in-cheek and saying "You wanna see what's in my head? Well here you go. Here's some pictures of the inside of my head."
This song is awesome :-)

The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics 17 years ago
Ooh. I just read on Amanda's blog that she HAS had an abortion, so I take back what I said. I still stand by my theory on the song, though.

Yellowcard – Ocean Avenue Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow, you folks really need to stop your foolish arguing.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that the Amityville Horror house was situated on 112 Occean Avenue?
(Can't really be bothered to trawl through 11 pages of comments, sorry! :-P)

Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics 17 years ago
I understand that it's about her finding an excuse for her promiscuity, and deciding that it must run in the family after having looked at her "friends'" inherited mental/physical disorders (I put it in quotation marks cos, who knows, they might not exist).
I read it in an interview she gave in Rock Sound magazine.

Based on that, I'm pretty sure the word "folks" is used as a hononym (sp?).

Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics 17 years ago
For some reason, whenever this song is in my head, my brain sings it as, "You're got the music / I guess that's the point of it all..." Not sure why. Sounds pretty though. My brain also seems to think the first line is, "Oh what a noble distinguished collection of freshwater friends you have made..." Again, not sure why. :-)

The drug addiction interpretation is the most obvious... which is why I'm not sure I agree with it. But saying that, I can't figure out an alternative explanation.

The needles/sewing imagery kind of reminded me of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter, but I hope it's not about that. I really hated that book.

The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics 17 years ago
Hmm. Much as I like the hours-per-menstrual-cycle explanation, I'm gonna disagree, because I'm thinking that if Amanda really had an abortion, she probably wouldn't talk about it the way she does (e.g. would she really write songs likes "Mandy Goes to Med School" or "Oasis" etc?), and because it doesn't really match her usual style of expressing such emotions.
I think it's more likely to be an apartment number/car number plate/area code/phone numbe/etc of a person.
The last line, I'm not too sure it's meant to be taken ultra-literally... but it definitely shows a sense of guilt in some form; like maybe this 672 person was someone she committed crimes with (drug use?), cheated on a partner with, was a girl, etc etc etc. Who knows.

I also once heard a theory about a 672 being some kind of aeroplane...?

Rasputina – A Retinue Of Moons - The Infidel Is Me Lyrics 17 years ago
Not long ago, I was incredibly drunk and incredibly tired and "A Retinue Of Moons" was in my head as I was trying to sleep, and I became convinced that it was about how we have technology to control our surroundings and make life easier for us, but we still can't control the weather. And then I began to get really scared, as I tend to do when I'm wasted and thinking about music.

Exactly how correct that interpretation is, I really could not say. I think the "Microphone will listen for thunder..." bit was in my head or something.

Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with the video game interpretations. The song seems to me to be about how video games imitate life, and the chaos that ensues when life imitates a video game.

I'm interested in why she stole the chord progression etc of a Queen song. "Killer Queen", right...? I get the importance of the word "killer", and the fact that it's another nod to British music like in some other songs on her album ("Oasis", etc), but is there another reason I'm overlooking?

Amanda Palmer – Astronaut: A Short History of Nearly Nothing Lyrics 17 years ago
Ooooh, that thing about Doctor Who is interesting. I never thought about it that way. But I certainly will do now.

submissions
Rasputina – Cage In a Cave Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm guessing this song may have something to do with Osama Bin Laden - comparing him to Fletcher Christian or what have you - because of the references to the caves, and also the song "Choose Me For Champion", which I understand has bits from a speech he made.

Malora Creager is so clever... her songs are full of really interesting imagery.

The Ataris – The Boys of Summer (Don Henley cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the Ataris did a FANTASTIC cover of this song. :-)

Tori Amos – Caught A Lite Sneeze Lyrics 17 years ago
Reading all these comments, I've realised what it is that I love about this song: it can be interpreted in many ways to help people through all kinds of different things in life. That's what makes a good song. :-)

Voltaire – Dead Girls Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not sure, Makis. It just seems to me that if that was the point of the song, Voltaire's doing it a little too subtley. But meh, who knows.

I think this was the first song I ever heard by Voltaire - and to this day it remains my favourite.

Voltaire – Anastasia Lyrics 17 years ago
Does anyone know who this Anastasia actually is?

Alkaline Trio – Cop Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow. I really hope the commenters at the start of this song spent the last seven years untwisting their panties.

Seriously. This song is about a particularly mean cop who Matt Skiba had a problem with. One cop. I sincerely doubt he's criticising the entire police force or instigating a discussion on the 9/11 attacks.

Cool song. :-)

Aqua – Around The World Lyrics 17 years ago

I like how he loses the bread halfway through the song.

Cordalene – Imaginary Lyrics 18 years ago
Ahhh, i love this song! And i am so glad it is on here.
I think it really is just general randomness, about liking someone a lot and "following" them everywhere, and so on. AWESOME. :-D

Primus – Wynona's Big Brown Beaver Lyrics 18 years ago
I honestly believe that this song is literally about a girl called Wynona who owns a beaver, and the point of it is that is sounds like it should be something somewhat ruder. But it's really a beaver.
I love Primus, me. ^_^

submissions
Alkaline Trio – Mercy Me Lyrics 18 years ago
This may sound crazy and complicated... but i believe this one is about feeling down because the singer is too happy to write any more depressing songs...
That's just how it sounds to me. ;-)

Regina Spektor – Pavlov's Daughter Lyrics 18 years ago
omfgmatty and terrorwalking need to shut up and accept that they have different tastes in music.
The point of dissecting the song is that the point of the website is to discuss the meanings of songs. Now please, please take your argument elsewhere.

Regina Spektor – Marry Ann Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow, i have to read that story.
Anyone else thinking that the apple pies, meatloaf, chicken breasts and pudding are referring to parts of the female anatomy...?

Jack's Mannequin – Into the Airwaves Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this one's basically just about being away from the girl he loves, and saying that he'll reach her again through radio waves or something. It's rather beautiful, this one is. :-)
And i agree with elis3xx - those lines speak volumes to me as well.

Jack's Mannequin – Dark Blue Lyrics 18 years ago
I've heard the thing that some of you have mentioned, about the blue light bulb, and that's gotta be true.
I know that this song is actually about relationships and sex and separation, etc, but whenever i listen to it, it doens't mean that to me. Usually when singers tell you that you're not alone, i just think, "Oh, f**k off, what do you know?" but when Andew sings it, i believe him.
"If you've ever been alone, you'll know dark blue."

submissions
Jack's Mannequin – La La Lie Lyrics 18 years ago
I doubt it's about his friends lying to him in a bad way, or dismissing lying friends or anything, because if you read the credits, he's got a bunch of his friends playing the instruments for it. I agree with earlier comments that it's probably about his friends saying things to make him feel better, which he thinks are lies.

But personally, i can't see how it would be about gonorrhoea... ;-)

submissions
Björk – Bachelorette Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the title of this song... i can relate to it so well. To me it seems to be looking at love and relationships from a very self-centred point of view (i don't necessarily mean that in a bad way), which, being kind of a loner myself, i can understand. It's about the rush of feelings, good and bad, when you love someone, but the title shows that in spite of it all, you still feel alone.

Allister – None Of My Friends Are Punks Lyrics 18 years ago

On another note, how AWESOME is the video?! :-D

Forgive Durden – Beware the Jubjub Bird and Shun the Fumious Bandersnatch Lyrics 18 years ago
I once heard that this one is about cannibalism. I see how how that fits in, but surely it must be b*ll*cks.
(Excuse the asterisks.)
To me it sounds like a the dark side of a fairytale. Obv the lyrics aren't exactly about that, but the music, and the words they've chosen... yeah, it's pretty awesome.

submissions
Martin Grech – Guiltless Lyrics 18 years ago
I totally agree with the above comments, it definitely sounds like a loss of innocence to me. I think the "cut me and it feels good" lyric is a sort of foreshadow into the child's future of sick thoughts.
(Not that sadomasochism is particularly sick or anything... i just think that the way Martin sings the words makes it sound like a sick version of it.)

The Cliks – Oh Yeah Lyrics 18 years ago

The Benjamins – Wonderful Lyrics 18 years ago

The Benjamins – Clover Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this one. It reminds me of a quiet person, sitting there and quietly telling the world how great they are inside, even though no one's listening.
Also it sounds like summer. :-)

Fiona Apple – Get Him Back Lyrics 18 years ago

InMe – Firefly Lyrics 18 years ago
When i first heard this song, honest to god, it scared me. I had no idea why. Then after 2 years or so of listening to it, it lost its scare. But now i've read Vacant Stare's interpretations, the whole album is going to scare me again.
THANKYOU! :-)
(I mean that, i love being scared!)

Cordalene – Imaginary Lyrics 18 years ago
Does anyone have ANY idea what this one's about? To me, it's a random confusion basically about liking someone very much. It's so random. I love it. :-D

Michelle Branch – Tuesday Morning Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song sounds more like a reflection, thinking about Monday night/Tuesday morning that was special in a relationship which is now over/ending, or on a night that was bittersweet in some way.

Björk – Unravel Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song so so much, but i wish that it didn't have the last line about making new love. Because there are people who i have missed like this - friends and family - who i don't really want to make love to...

submissions
Björk – Joga Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is the song i'd like to hear when i die. Because in the words i can hear that longing and love for someone who is maybe not there, and in the music i can hear both confusion and peace. And a lot of depth. I love Bjork. :-)

Voltaire – The Headless Waltz Lyrics 18 years ago

Voltaire – #1 Fan Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with Dullahan. It's about being obsessively in love with someone and FEELING like a stalker, i think. I get the impression that it's maybe about seeing someone after they've broken up with you and you've realised how much you like them... i don't know..

submissions
John Ralston – Gone Gone Gone Lyrics 18 years ago
This song's beautiful. It weirds me out how much his songs seem to reflect on my own life in really weird ways - like the line, "...into a shallow world of painted girls and marionettes" - shortly after a relationship of mine ended, i took to living statue work (painted girls) and wrote a song called "Marionette".
I have to see this dude play live some day... although it just might kill me like it did you guys at the top. ;-)

Christian Death – Romeo's Distress Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song sounds like it's about loving someone who you can't have, using the metaphors of Romeo and Juliet and the KKK. It still remains cryptic to me, though. I'd love to know what Rozz was thinking when he wrote it.
