Whether Jim James wrote this song as a reference to a relationship or not, I read into it as a request to his critics. "SORRY BOUT THE THINGS THAT I HAD TO SAY - AND I'LL MAKE IT UP TO YOU RIGHT NOW AT THE PENNY ARCADE" sounds like an apology to a writer about an interview and he is suggesting they meet again in a less-common location (arcade). Either that or as a response to a critic who bashed the band and James is trying to change the critics opinion with an "off-the-record" type meeting. Also, he claims that neither of the parties likes to "GET ALL WRAPPED UP IN THE ILLUSION OF DOIN SOMETHING THAT [they] KNOW AIN'T RIGHT," for example the writer twisting James words or James getting caught up in the corruption of the music industry. Because of this he suggests that both parties have "GOT TO WANT TO RE-ARRANGE AND KEEP IT OFF THE RECORD" while admitting and suggesting that the writer has "GOT TO KNOW THAT WE WILL CHANGE AND KEEP IT OFF THE RECORD." The majority of this song led me to think it as a relationship inspired song but I dug a little deeper and twisted some phrases to get it the way I understand it now. He seems to be bargaining with the writer to excuse the situation because he knows the writer “DON'T NEED THE CONFUSION AND I KNOW YOU JUST AIN'T THE TYPE.” Also, the jam conclusion has a significant resemblance to The Doors. |

| I've seen this song live 3 times and there is no other song I've ever heard that strikes such an emotional cord in the performer and the audience. He is amazing and we are fortunate to listen to his music. | |

| This piece is just captivating. It's length, frequent variations and ability to be freely interpreted makes it one of the most euphoric songs to listen to. You can absorb the slow portions, quick ones or the whole thing and have a completely liberating 10-12 minutes. Even more spectacular live when all the emotion is captured and you are forced to be swept away by this flowing masterpiece. | |
