A beautiful song wrecked by the operatic excess of Sofie whats-her-name.
I love the semi-autobiographical lyrics that Elvo sings about (I think) the craft of songwriting. |

Frente have produced a great interpretation of the classic NO song. Angie Hart's voice is perfect in this sombre, reflective version.
However, the interpretation doesnt capture the anguish and the confusion the way the original does. New Order's is best. |

A great song, one of the best songs on a disappointing follow-up to Silent Alarm. |

Forgive the cliche, but this is a guy wrestling with his demons - literally. 'The devil bought me a drink and he's been buying them ever since'. He is suffering the consequences of his temptation (whether it really is Lucifer, or the drink or something else, he's suffering) but he has steeled himself and he's going to take things on. He's looking forward to the conflict and he's sure of victory. Great song, and I love the play on the 'Mersey Beat' from the 1960s. |

I agree with Alieno. It's almost like a dialogue. He says, 'Things are tough, can't get you out of my head' She says, 'You've just got to get over it'. He says, 'It's hard to be alone, you're gonna need me.' She says, 'You hanging on is really freaking me out.' He says, 'I'll do better this time.' She says, 'Do you really want me to be blunt with you? Just get over it.'
Or something like that. Could almost have been a duet. |

Probably the greatest song of the 1980s. Don't get side-tracked by the song title, NO's song titles often don't match up with Barney's lyrics and are almost a separate creative process.
Clearly, the protagonist is in a bit of anguish and doesnt know how to attain a love that is forbidden. His powerlessness and his crazy hope is captured beautifully in this song.
Check out some of the covers of this song. The Stabbing Westward cover is poor, like a whitebread imitation of the original. The one by indie band THE SPEAKS is a great take on the song, check that one out. The best cover by far is the version by the Australian band FRENTE out of Melbourne; singer Angie Hart gives a beautiful vocal over a haunting acoustic guitar and gives the song a whole new power. Check it out; some of the P2P sites have it labelled as Jewel, but it's definitely FRENTE. |

This is a great song, but not the best on the album. i don't understand why it has so many people talking about it. Maybe because many of the contributors to this site seem to be the lovesick - you know, dumped college kids and 40 year old divorcees. I mean, how many times do you read 'this is exactly what happened to me' when looking through the comments on this site? I guess it's all legitmate (the question DOES say 'What does this song mean to you?'), but it's just so boring. |
