| i definitely think its about immigration and the people who put their lives on the line to cross. how so many don't make it and are left by their own families to die in the desert with the only id being a cross and a metal tag. i used to live in tucson and heard so many stories like that. | |

First, my vote is also that andy is saying Joy on the album at least several times. It sure doesn't sound like "god" My take on this song... It sounds like the story of a father with a drug addiction and zealotous relationship with Christ who is physically but not emotionally around for his child, except to lecture him about Christ. Hence, the child misses his father, whom for many children, is the physical manifestation of God on earth. (Which is to say that a child's first representation of God the Father is their own father. Also, children tend to deify their parents and see them as perfect beings and persons to emulate) So, here this poor child has no father/Father to turn to - i'm sure he feels God the Father has abandoned him, too since he got stuck with such a crappy father...and of course that would suck the Joy out of his life...and he tries desperately to get his father's attention but to no avail...because his father is too busy getting stoned and waxing philosophic about Christ... too literal? |
