Elliott Smith – The White Lady Loves You More Lyrics 16 years ago
People think Elliott's songs are about drugs, because almost all of them can be interpreted that way and many of them ARE.
And The Beatles were on drugs too, so that's not really a valid point either.

Jay-Z – D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) Lyrics 16 years ago
I disagree. I think it's more about the new style of rap (it doesn't deserve to be called hip hop) that's on the radio today. He might be poking fun at Kanye, but Kanye already got it out of his system. He even said that he wouldn't be using auto-tune anymore because it wasn't well-received. If he is attacking anyone it's people like T-Pain who couldn't survive without it.

Nick Drake – Saturday Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
it seems like he had a chance to do something and he didn't pursue it, so the chance was gone.
you often regret the things you choose not to do rather than the things you do.

The Sound of Animals Fighting – There Can Be No Dispute That Monsters Live Among Us Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree that the message behind the song is good, but that doesn't make it a good song; that makes it a smart song. I don't like this song for the simple fact that people don't want to give me a choice about it. It's just a matter of reactance. If I don't like this song, people will say I'm being ignorant. But if I do like it, then all is well. I just want some freedom of choice here. I listened to this song once and did not enjoy it, therefore; I will probably not listen to it again anytime soon. Thus, in my opinion, this is not a good song.

To quote High Fidelity:
You don't have it? That is perverse. Don't tell anybody you don't own f%*king Blonde on Blonde. It's gonna be okay.

Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
I find it slightly ironic that children spend most of their childhood wanting to grow up, while adults often yearn for childhood. We wait all that time to for physical and mental changes to help us grow up and become capable of doing great things and influencing many people, but the changes are so gradual that we often do not realize they are taking place. Human beings are so powerful by nature, but our need to be accepted and our fear of failure often prevents us from realizing our power.
That's what I think this song is about.

The Lonely Island – I'm on a Boat Lyrics 16 years ago
This is definitely meant to be a parody of the rap music on the radio today.
They are talking about things that really aren't that great and making them sound like the greatest shit imaginable. After all, it's just a boat.

Puff Daddy – I'll Be Missing You Lyrics 17 years ago
sting owns 100% of the publishing royalties.
and it's not stealing if you have permission.
so take this song for what it's worth instead of bashing it for being "stolen".

Guns N' Roses – Knockin' on Heaven's Door Lyrics 17 years ago
shadowsprite, considering that dylan, a christian, wrote this song and that heaven is a christian idea, the religion thing kind of makes sense.

Josh Ritter – Lawrence, KS Lyrics 17 years ago
I find it interesting that he is describing places that you would only find in the midwestern United States. Most people find "Dirt roads and dryland farming" boring, but growing up in the middle of nowhere can be an extremely nostalgic experience.

Bob Dylan – Desolation Row Lyrics 17 years ago
The last verse of Desolation Row, to me defines the entire song. To me there are two possible meanings; one, both, or neither could be correct:
1). When Dylan says, "All these people that you mention/Yes, I know them, they're quite lame/I had to rearrange their faces/And give them all another name" he could be saying that whomever is mailing him letters is talking about people from his past who are no longer of interest to him, so he changes their faces and names to those of famous people.
2). Similarly, those same lines could be referring to the famous figures themselves and Dylan is using these lines to explain to the listener that fame and fortune aren't all they are cracked up to be...

Needless to say, this song is timeless, and for good reason.

Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics 17 years ago
Although the lyrics don't completely support my thoughts, when I hear this song I usually imagine myself in the shoes of the narrator and I often ask myself what I would want the last day of my life to be like. Would I run away from my death or would I embrace it?

Just food for thought.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 17 years ago
The family from the 1940s is Anne Frank's family. Mangum mentions the name 'Anna' in the song, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea also. Her father survived, but the rest of the family didn't, which explains the first stanza.

My impression is actually the exact opposite of Mithra's. I want to do world changing things when I hear this.

Brand New – Handcuffs Lyrics 18 years ago
to me, this song is simply about how the consequences of your actions are what influence to to do/not do something. for example, if you were given the opportunity to rob a town's worth of houses without suffering any consequences, would you do it? the problem is that most people would. a genuinely good/saintly person would refrain from such actions no matter the consequences (or lack thereof).

vincent/the entire band is afraid that they have become the kind of people that would take the chance to do evil if it was given to them. they desire saintliness, but they are still human.

Brand New – Not the Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree with strummer on this one. i think that when he says "you are not the sun", it is not because she believes the world revolves around her. he says that because he is trying to convince himself that he doesn't need her to survive (like he needs the sun to survive).

Pink Floyd – Outside the Wall Lyrics 18 years ago
Why do "Goodbye Cruel World" and "Hey You" not run together, but "Outside the Wall" and "in the flesh?" do. Sometimes I think disc 2 was meant to be played first

Death Cab for Cutie – A Lack of Color Lyrics 18 years ago
I think its funny that he mentions the "seeing upside down" thing because everyone actually sees upside down when they are born, but our brains learsn to reverse our vision. I would have never thought to put that into words because it seems so obvious to me, but it really fits if you think of it as a metaphor for first impressions. (They are often very different, even opposite, from what is reality).

This was my dad and step moms wedding song.

I think its about how newlyweds find joy in everything and the only thing they really care about at that point is each other. Beautiful song.

Sonic Youth – Superstar Lyrics 18 years ago
The original was actually by a group called Delaney, Bonnie & Friends (or something similar to that) but the most famous is obviously by The Carpenters.

Supposedly, its about a groupie who fell in love with a rock star and he told her he loved her back, but he has moved on in his tour and now she can only hear him on the radio.

The Receiving End Of Sirens – Epilogue Lyrics 18 years ago
actually, it is a concept album. I heard on some interview from the band (i can't remember where. sorry.) that it is about how your brain can tell you something is impossible and your nerves can physically stop you from doing something, but your heart still has power over your emotions and you yourself ultimately have control of your life. you just have to have the drive to use your heart to your advantage.

I could be totally mistaken that the band actually said that, but my theory makes sense if you listen.

Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics 18 years ago
Has anyone ever read 1984 by George Orwell?
I can't really explain my theory if you haven't read it but this song reminds me of that especially the lines "Are you such a dreamer to put the world to rights?" and also "You can scream and you can shout. It's too late now."

P.S. read the book if nothing else because its fantastic.

Weezer – My Name Is Jonas Lyrics 18 years ago
I think its funny that on four or five different sites, someone says that this song reminds them of "The Giver". And I agree with the being a little kid theory. Sometimes time kind of slips away from you and you realize that you arent 10 years old anymore and you never will be again... and I just made a really upbeat song sound depressing.

Linkin Park – Hands Held High Lyrics 18 years ago
has anyone ever thought that maybe if they don't know about something they shouldn't try to protest it? unless one was in the room when Congress (yes Congress, not Bush) declared war on Iraq then maybe one doesn't know all of the reasons for having the war. I do like parts of this sont tho.

i think it's funny that everyone says that this is nirvana's best song, considering that Kurt hated it and didnt even want it to be released. also, i read somewhere that "here we are now, entertain us" was somthing Kurt said to break the ice when Nirvana arrived at parties

Sunny Day Real Estate – Seven Lyrics 18 years ago
actually SDRE is an almost essential precursor to emo, but emo didnt have the same negative connotations in the 90s as it does today so calling them emo is a compliment

the lyrics are so perfect and the drums also. if you dont own diary you should leave your house and not go back until a copy is in your hand

Emery – Fractions Lyrics 18 years ago
i think that one person in the relationship wants to go beyond just the casual hook-up and have an actual relationship but can't for some reason (possibly an affair or just because their partner has no interest in a real relationship)
