| Elliott Smith – The White Lady Loves You More Lyrics

People think Elliott's songs are about drugs, because almost all of them can be interpreted that way and many of them ARE.
And The Beatles were on drugs too, so that's not really a valid point either. |

| Jay-Z – D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) Lyrics

I disagree. I think it's more about the new style of rap (it doesn't deserve to be called hip hop) that's on the radio today. He might be poking fun at Kanye, but Kanye already got it out of his system. He even said that he wouldn't be using auto-tune anymore because it wasn't well-received. If he is attacking anyone it's people like T-Pain who couldn't survive without it. |

| The Sound of Animals Fighting – There Can Be No Dispute That Monsters Live Among Us Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
|
I agree that the message behind the song is good, but that doesn't make it a good song; that makes it a smart song. I don't like this song for the simple fact that people don't want to give me a choice about it. It's just a matter of reactance. If I don't like this song, people will say I'm being ignorant. But if I do like it, then all is well. I just want some freedom of choice here. I listened to this song once and did not enjoy it, therefore; I will probably not listen to it again anytime soon. Thus, in my opinion, this is not a good song. |

| Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
I find it slightly ironic that children spend most of their childhood wanting to grow up, while adults often yearn for childhood. We wait all that time to for physical and mental changes to help us grow up and become capable of doing great things and influencing many people, but the changes are so gradual that we often do not realize they are taking place. Human beings are so powerful by nature, but our need to be accepted and our fear of failure often prevents us from realizing our power.
That's what I think this song is about. |

| The Lonely Island – I'm on a Boat Lyrics

This is definitely meant to be a parody of the rap music on the radio today.
They are talking about things that really aren't that great and making them sound like the greatest shit imaginable. After all, it's just a boat.

I find it interesting that he is describing places that you would only find in the midwestern United States. Most people find "Dirt roads and dryland farming" boring, but growing up in the middle of nowhere can be an extremely nostalgic experience. |

| Bob Dylan – Desolation Row Lyrics
|
The last verse of Desolation Row, to me defines the entire song. To me there are two possible meanings; one, both, or neither could be correct:
1). When Dylan says, "All these people that you mention/Yes, I know them, they're quite lame/I had to rearrange their faces/And give them all another name" he could be saying that whomever is mailing him letters is talking about people from his past who are no longer of interest to him, so he changes their faces and names to those of famous people.
2). Similarly, those same lines could be referring to the famous figures themselves and Dylan is using these lines to explain to the listener that fame and fortune aren't all they are cracked up to be...
Needless to say, this song is timeless, and for good reason. |

| Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics

Although the lyrics don't completely support my thoughts, when I hear this song I usually imagine myself in the shoes of the narrator and I often ask myself what I would want the last day of my life to be like. Would I run away from my death or would I embrace it?
Just food for thought. |

| Brand New – Handcuffs Lyrics

to me, this song is simply about how the consequences of your actions are what influence to to do/not do something. for example, if you were given the opportunity to rob a town's worth of houses without suffering any consequences, would you do it? the problem is that most people would. a genuinely good/saintly person would refrain from such actions no matter the consequences (or lack thereof).
vincent/the entire band is afraid that they have become the kind of people that would take the chance to do evil if it was given to them. they desire saintliness, but they are still human. |

i agree with strummer on this one. i think that when he says "you are not the sun", it is not because she believes the world revolves around her. he says that because he is trying to convince himself that he doesn't need her to survive (like he needs the sun to survive). |

I think its funny that he mentions the "seeing upside down" thing because everyone actually sees upside down when they are born, but our brains learsn to reverse our vision. I would have never thought to put that into words because it seems so obvious to me, but it really fits if you think of it as a metaphor for first impressions. (They are often very different, even opposite, from what is reality). |

The original was actually by a group called Delaney, Bonnie & Friends (or something similar to that) but the most famous is obviously by The Carpenters.
Supposedly, its about a groupie who fell in love with a rock star and he told her he loved her back, but he has moved on in his tour and now she can only hear him on the radio. |

| The Receiving End Of Sirens – Epilogue Lyrics

actually, it is a concept album. I heard on some interview from the band (i can't remember where. sorry.) that it is about how your brain can tell you something is impossible and your nerves can physically stop you from doing something, but your heart still has power over your emotions and you yourself ultimately have control of your life. you just have to have the drive to use your heart to your advantage.
I could be totally mistaken that the band actually said that, but my theory makes sense if you listen. |

I can't really explain my theory if you haven't read it but this song reminds me of that especially the lines "Are you such a dreamer to put the world to rights?" and also "You can scream and you can shout. It's too late now."
P.S. read the book if nothing else because its fantastic. |

I think its funny that on four or five different sites, someone says that this song reminds them of "The Giver". And I agree with the being a little kid theory. Sometimes time kind of slips away from you and you realize that you arent 10 years old anymore and you never will be again... and I just made a really upbeat song sound depressing. |
