i'm wondering if this song has anything to do with her experiences in the band honey is cool. there is a song called something above the mountains that has the lyrics "there is something above the mountains/ there is something that i can't see" so clearly that is a reference to that song. i think they broke up or went on an extended hiatus so it could maybe just be about getting over the break up and growing up and realizing some of her views have changed since then. at any rate i really like how she alludes to lyrics in other songs she has performed. |

well i didn't know for sure that antony was gay before i made this interpretation so at first i thought this was just a personal interpretation but maybe it's what he meant. i think it's about a feeling that a lot of people in the queer community can relate to, which is a longing for someone that we can't have. whether or not the individual is gay or not, the individual is certainly not open if he or she is and we believe that they must be. "We live together in a photograph of time" I know of sometimes when I've had this feeling for someone and there is a picture where we happen to be standing next to each other and I will kind of fantasize that it was meant to be a picture of us. that it is evidence of our love. and then maybe this song is specifically about someone who is physically harmed by the object of their affection and that person continues to believe that it's really a symbol of their love and devotion, whether or not that really is the case. it might sound almost creepy if you don't know the feeling personally, but i think people who have experienced this feeling even if they didn't get beat up, will completely understand this interpretation. |

ok for the record, if you look at the artwork that m.i.a. created for the album there is a page that has some of the lyrics for this song on it. i am almost certain that there is some discrepancy between what is recorded and what she wrote on this page but i think its the most authoritative version, since m.i.a. created the art herself (i did fix SOME spelling errors that he had in it tho). "i'll fly like paper get high like planes/you catch me at the border i got visas in my name/ if you come around here i'll make em all day/ i'll get one done in a second if you wait.../ sometimes i think sitting on trains/ every step i get to i'm clocking that game/ everyone's a winner, we're making our name/ bona fide hustler making my name.../ no one on the corner had swagger like us. hit me on the bunner/ prepaid wireless. we pack and deliver like UPS trucks/ already going hell for pumping that gas." |

i think many people have said similar things, but i just wanted to put it in my own words. i think it's about wanting or expecting someone to be the perfect person for you and accept you for who you are, but finding out that they really aren't willing to put enough effort in to really do that. And then when you come to that realization, you still just want to love the person and believe it and have some kind of love, because being along and longing for someone is painful. however, it's better to be alone when you have to give up so much of yourself and your needs to just keep the "love" going. |

well i don't know if this is what is meant by the knife, but for me this song with be about a personal experience: there was a guy that i really liked and i felt like we were meant to be together, at least for a bit, but nothing ever came of it. then as i was about to leave the country he expressed interest in me and we had a couple wonderful nights together. now i am abroad and i don't know what is going to happen but i still feel a connection to this song. many lines continue the meaning for me. like the chorus. i really wished that we would be together but i knew that i wouldn't be satisfied if it was just some "prayer" being answered. because then it wouldn't feel real. and the first verse rings true too because we were both a bit more forward because of drugs and alcohol, not to mention the time constraints of me leaving. it (and the lyrics) really felt like it was supposed to be something that happened after a couple years of knowing each other, but our situation accelerate what was bound to come. and the "we had a promise made, four hands and then away" makes sense for us too because we had decided that after this experience, i would be away, so not to think about it too much. (at least until i come back) |

| i agree with casiotone. it's pretty clear cut. and it seems especially likely considering the bands obvious left leanings (which i love so much about them) | |

the posted lyrics are perfect except for a very obvious mistake. they don't say "and the play the music louder," she very clearly says "and the play the techno louder." i listened very closely to each time they said it, and it always sounds exactly like"techno" not "music" i don't think it has a very deep impact on the meaning but i thought i'd mention it. other than that i think this song is fairly straight forward and doesn't need a whole lot of deciphering. |

| The Knife – Is It Medicine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| i agree with everyone as well but i thought maybe the line "is it medicine or social skill?" could also be questioning if the answer to things like social anxiety is medicine or correcting social skills. or at least, is the "bad" behavior a by-product of the medicines they are taking or just who they are. | |
