The National – Green Gloves Lyrics 18 years ago
Right now I'm with devilgirl, i think the green glves are those CSI latex gloves. But I'm gonna start at the beginning.

He talks about how he's losing touch with all of his friends, but he hopes that they are still staying together, and when he says, "I have arms for them" I think he's saying that he wants to see them again sometime. His arms are open, in other words.

When he talks about his green gloves, it's as devilgirl said. They are gloves for investigating. He can use them to find out what they are doing and how they're feeling.

I do agree with the alcohol them though. By the end of the song the lyrics and the sound is sorrowful in my opinion. It sounds like he's drinking somewhere dreaming about having the chance to get back in touch with them.

Amazing song anyway. I love the whole album.

Jimmy Eat World – Table For Glasses Lyrics 18 years ago

I think you have a very interesting take of the song, and I'm beginning to agree with you. But I completely disagree with your idea that "grunge doesn't make sense." Sure, certain artists don't make any sense, but the same can be said of emo. Nirvana and Brand New are two of my favorite bands, which one is harder to understand?

I do really like your interpretation of the clarity as a whole, but I think it applies to music in general in the 90's, not just grunge.

ps: KURT COBAIN LIVES!!!... jk

Jimmy Eat World – Believe In What You Want Lyrics 18 years ago
I completely agree with SkizLano on the overall meaning, but not the specific lines. I think it's funny that JEW ended up they way they did (ie: their self titled album, omg), when they've written songs like this about not caving to label.

The Flaming Lips – Plastic Jesus (The Goldcoast Singers cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
I think that the meaning of the song in the movie (Cool Hand Luke) is so much deeper than the actual song itself.

It's like all of the sudden he finds himself in need of an emotional outlet, but he reaches down all that he can pull back up is this song. And then he has to get out of there.

The Spill Canvas – Your Evil Soul Lyrics 18 years ago
There are parts that I think I understand and parts that I don't

Obviously he has been through some difficult relationship, and still has a lot of feelings for the person (mostly bad). That's pretty apparent in the last bridge:

"I know you did not mean to do everything you put me through.
It's okay I forgive you."

I disagree with some posts about the elixir reference. I think he is saying that she poisoned him in a way. And just like you get the elixir from the snake that gave the poison, he's getting it from her. That why he still says that his mouth is "overflow[ing] with her evil soul", even though an elixir is supposed to be a good thing.

After the nightmare, he say "You're floating above my head, and there are words carved in my chest and they said". I'm trying to understand the signifigance of the words being carved in his chest. I'm thinking that it is supposed show how he has been tortured, most likely in the form of ungiven affection.

I don't think that there is much good about this girl, but that he does forgive her because of her ignorance. It's a "nightmare [she] couldn't believe... a nightmare [she] could not conceive". So even though she caused this tremendous pain, he is still willing to forgive her.

That's just my take tough, feel free to critique.

Jimmy Eat World – 23 Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about how he is trying to build up the courage to talk to some girl, while he waits for her to say something to him.

"You'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time"

Neither of them wants to try anything, because they are afraid they will be hurt. It's much easier just to imagine how it would work out. That's why he says this:

"Don't give away the end. The one thing that stays mine."

He's imagining how it would turn out if he said something, but he doesn't want to say anything because of the chance he might ruin it.

Other things, I think, also support this idea. Like when he says that he knew that it was their time, but he's sorry every day. He should've made a move, but he couldn't and regrets that. And again he talks about regret further down.

"I won't always love, what I'll never have.
I won't always live in my regrets."

Here he is saying that he won't always be this way, someday he'll be able to talk to this girl (or just be more sure of himself in general), and he won't always regret not doing things that he wished he did.

Just my take though, feel free to critique.

Neil Young – Rockin' in the Free World Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't really see the sarcasm some of you have mentioned, except maybe in the line about the thousand points of light, but only there. I think the song is also more personally related to Neil Young and how he sees his life in reacation to what is wrong with America.

In the first verse I think he's talking about how vain we are, to the point that we overlook all of our problems. That's why we're raising flags everyone, but no one cares about the poor.

Everyone is pretty much in agreement about the second verse, it's pretty straight forward.

And the third, I think is about the falacy of a lot of the things we do, and a lot of the values we have. He's saying that we're still doing bad things, still being unjust to different peoples (poor, foreign, minorities; I think he's talking about everyone that's treated unfairly), but we're doing it in a way that appears "nicer" if that even makes sense.

I got a little of point for a bit, but feel free to criticize. Thanks for reading.

The Beatles – All You Need Is Love Lyrics 18 years ago
I refuse to believe that nothing is important other than love, and I also refuse to believe that John Lennon thinks so little of Science and Art.

Actually, maybe he's just thinking of Science and Art as a means; they are just things we can use to show our love for each other :)

Brand New – Limousine Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't tell if some of the people on here are being sarcastic or honestly don't know that this is about Katie Flynn. The reason Jesse mentions Jesus ("died for you one time, but never again"), is because he is saying that there is no forgiveness for the drunk driver that hit their limo, who's being crushed by his own guilt. He mentions that the girl is laying petals in the aisle, Katie Flynn was the flower girl at her aunt's wedding.

It was written about Katie Flynn.

And it takes a pretty ignorant person to call someone an idiot for expressing their opinion.

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 18 years ago
It seems fairly unanimous that the song is about infidelity, but I think there are a few areas where there is a lot of dissagreement.

The first is the amount of infidelity. I don't think that anyone is having an affair yet, but that it's on his mind a lot, hence the small crime. It sounds like maybe the relationships gone sour and neither of them have really addressed it yet, and he's been thinking about other people and now he's feeling guilty.

The gun metaphore is also disputed. A lot of you have been saying that it's related to their emotions, but in a loving way (sorry if you said something else and I missed it). I'm trying to think of a gun for what it is... a very powerful thing that can hurt and kill other people, and I think that is what he is giving up. He is giving away his power to hurt his current girlfriend, giving it to her actually, because he'd rather it was her that ended things. Maybe if she ends the relationship, then he can "hold it" or deal with the aftereffects.

That's my take I think, feel free to critique.

Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics 18 years ago
I think that this song is about a relationship that Jesse ended. Someone said earlier that it may have been for no real reason and I think that fits.

I did the same thing a few years ago, and this song describes the feelings that are involved so well.

All you want to do is get rid of the guilt that you feel for breaking this person's heart, and "if it make's [them] less sad", you'll do just about anything.
