No, no no. It's about sex, the most obvious explanation is found in the non-too-subtle simile, "it's like a cigarette in the mouth or a handshake in the doorway". This references sexual movement... won't go into details. As well as this, "on top", the very title of the song, is a sexual position. So yeah, it's about a lot of things. Especially sex. |

I'll reiterate what some people have said. Conor (singing autobiographically, suggested in the reference to his own brother, Justin, although he may be taking on the persona of someone else suffering depression) talks about how he overcame depression and the wish to end his lives with the "pills" he "thought [he]'d need" due to the "salvation" of his brother, Justin, who gave him the "plain" advice he needed. When Justin has a "baby", Conor wants to be "pure" so that he can be an adequate and loving uncle, harboring no secrets of deep depression. He wants to love life so that his new nephew can, too. How uplifting is that!? |
