Marilyn Manson – The Speed Of Pain Lyrics 1 month ago
Personally, I can't get past the phrase "I wanna outrace the speed of pain for another day." To me, and not just in light of recent revalations, it sounds like he knows he's going to have to pay for his sins, whether against women or against himself, eventually, but just wants one more day free from the pain of reality. I can put that bill off one more day - I can fake my way through another night with my significant other, or another day of painful isolation - I can deny that I'm a disaster for now, but it's going to catch up with me at some point. Just give me one more day of pretending everything's OK, and then another day, because I can't face my own damage, much less the consequences of who I've become and what I've done.

I have no idea if Manson was so introspective this early in his career, but that's my take. And it's why sometimes, I can't stop listening to the song.

VNV Nation – Carbon Lyrics 2 years ago
Just my two cents - I've always thought the lyrics were kind of creating an image of a world where everyone is falling all over themselves to make it pretty (festooning it with lights, for example) and advertising our progress (maybe) to impress someone who's observing us, but no one is watching because there's no one out there. We've destroyed ourselves preparing for a party that no one will be attending. I have no idea if I'm even close, maybe there is no getting close because the imagery is meant to be open to interpretation, but that reading of the words makes this one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard - and I love a good sad song.

Faith No More – Midlife Crisis Lyrics 10 years ago
For no particular reason, this song just popped into my head, along with an idea as to what it's about - I don't entirely believe Patton's Madonna explanation. I can't claim to understand all the lyrics, but I think it is actually about a female midlife crisis, the time when a woman gets to the now-or-never realization about having children. She's still beautiful and youthful but empty without procreating. The question is whether she's ready - after all, her menstruating heart isn't bleeding enough for two. It's actually fairly similar territory to what they covered in Zombie Eaters (on the off chance I'm right, that is; Patton is a cryptic genius).

K's Choice – Shadowman Lyrics 12 years ago
This may be one of those songs that's so personal that no one could ever interpret the intended meaning, but I agree with spiralled - I think it has to do with depression, specifically with trying to keep that aspect of oneself a secret (hidden in the shadows). "I will lie and say I'm fine" and "I'll pretend to see the light" support that. The shadowman is not only the secret but also the dark side of the singer, telling him that the sun will cease to shine. The singer is attempting to be happy and find love, but all he sees is the shadowman inside. "You came to me anew or was it me who came to you" could be read as questioning whether the depression is a disease and therefore separate from the singer or an integral part of him. Just some thoughts. Regardless of what the song is actually about, the words and music are incredibly powerful.
