For me this song is about the struggle to understand why bad things happen to good people. He's trying to reassure himself that there is justice in the after life - lake of fire and fry. That bad people are punished and good rewarded. But when bad things happen people lose their faith, like the woman bit by the dog, and you can't help but wonder. The people looking for a dry place to call their own are trying to come to an understanding that will bring them peace as to why this happened. The line "won't see'em again till the fourth of July" is just a way of saying they won't think of these again until something bad happens again. |
