Joanna Newsom – Cassiopeia Lyrics 16 years ago
That verse is just amazing and possibly my favourite of all her lyrics.

Regina Spektor – Lacrimosa Lyrics 17 years ago
She doesn't sing the last two verses e.g. "Compassionate Lord Jesus...Amen"

She pronounces the lyrics in the Ecclesiastical style, which is the way the Catholic Church pronounces Latin. e.g. 'par-che' instead of 'par-ke' or 'judicandus' instead of 'iudicandus'. That's pretty cool.

Regina Spektor – The Bronx Lyrics 18 years ago
Reminded me of Bruce Lee: "Be formless... shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle; it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot; it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, and it can crash. Be like water, my friend..."[59]

Regina Spektor – Making Records Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree, she sounds lonely. I'm always surprised by how deep Regina's songs can get. She's not afraid to hit the hard words, the hard subjects. I know what alcoholics are like, and the 'why don't I just pee in the middle of this kitchen' hit me hard because I've seen it before. It's not pretty, it's not nice. But she gets the idea of a person who is longing for something better.

Perhaps she said corazon because it sounds a little like 'chorus'-on?

Regina Spektor – Braille Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah, I'm still an asshole playing with candles
Blowing out wishes, blowing out dreams

I think this part's really confusing. I'm assuming the mother is pretty old by now (40s), but she seems to be saying that she's still irresponsible and therefore still ruining other people's lives (blowing out dreams). But that doesn't seem to fit the regretful tone of the rest of the song because you think she'd learn by now.

So I think the woman is imagining herself as that long-gone father, still getting people pregnant and ruining their lives. So those two lines take on a particularly spiteful tone, because she hates to think of what that father is doing now.

Regina Spektor – Folding Chair Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the "There's a shadow, you can't see my eyes' refers to the depressed state of the boy she is talking about. Depressed people usually don't notice the states of other people, they're under a 'shadow', hence the boy can't see her eyes, and eyes are usually considered the windows to the soul, from which you can determine feelings and thoughts.

So the boy/man she likes is glum. I'm guessing the guy is down because he was dumped by another girl, which was why she invites him to sit next to her: "Come on over..." maybe as a way to cheer him up, maybe as a way to strike up a new relationship.

I originally thought that the "shadow" referred to an umbrella in the sand, and Regina was sitting underneath it in the shade, which was why the man couldn't see her eyes, but I think the depressed state theory makes more sense.

And to cheer him up, Regina sings in a sort of cheerful way. It's a beautiful song.

I always thought Regina was playing the role of the sister bear in the fable of Goldilocks.

The Grates – Rock Boys Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about a girl whose run away from home and hooks up with troublemakers (the rock boys), but they just want sex and excitement (the boys are on top and all they have to say is 'rock').

So she runs away again (?) because she is feeling nostalgic about home. While she's going home, she feels regret about leaving the rock boys, but then thinks to how bad they were: 'how could I have missed them (the rock boys) at all'

So that's my take on it.

Regina Spektor – Daniel Cowman Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with liberatepotatoes, because of this:

I says, no--you're gonna drown
and he says, no--I can't drown

I would have expected HB to say 'I won't drown' if he was simply trying to reassure DC that he wasn't going to have an accident in the bath.

Instead, he uses the word can't, like it's physically impossible for him to drown.

Regina Spektor – Buildings Lyrics 18 years ago
Does anyone know what it means by time sifting through itself? I keep thinking of a sieve and flour, but I'm not sure how the idea of separating fits into the story.

And can anyone suggest a reason why the last verses are really fragmented? I thought it might connect to the idea of sifting, and that only the most important parts are being filtered down...

Regina Spektor – Edit Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is talking about a person who can't get drugs. White lines/cocaine is on his mind constantly, but he is unprepared to lie to his friends and family about what's troubling him: 'you were never ready for the lies'.

He has no suppliers, like Doctor Roberts, he doesn't even have street cred to get some drugs quickly.

And although he can 'write' AKA he took drugs, he can't 'edit' his actions, or go back on what he did. Regina compares the metaphor of writing with taking drugs. It's an irreversible act that's kept him in a cycle of dependence, reflected through the way Regina sings this song, in a sort of mechanical loop. It actually sounds like a CD stuck and replaying over and over.

So she's been having suicidal thoughts?

The Dresden Dolls – Modern Moonlight Lyrics 18 years ago
The last two verses are from the Doll's perspective, and they say they're going to separate you (the trapped consumer) from the computer, the TV, the whole consumer-based society. Hence the electronic reference:"we’re gonna...cut your cables cut your cords".

The modern moonlight could be a ton of things, but IMO, it's a metaphor for all the gadgets, technology and consumer interests that have influenced our state of mind. Moonlight is supposed to help you see at night, but this modern moonlight is a twisted version that only forces you to buy and buy. So the Dolls are saying to us, we'll shock you out of your duped state:
"we’re gonna make your LIGHT a living hell, cos stripped of your equipment you’ll be forced to face yourself…"

And then they're encouraging a sort of war against corporations, and at the end, notice how we're supposed to read about it in the newspaper, not the internet or tv. Throwback to old times?

Just my thoughts.
