"It’s a break up song but I didn’t want it to be a guy pissed off at a girl because that always sounds so wimpy. I thought it'd be cool to write it from a girl's perspective. The lyrics came out a bit weird and we thought maybe we could flog this off to a girl singer, but then I thought no, this song needs to be sung with balls!"

Is this the end
Or just the start of something really, really beautiful
Wrapped up and disguised
As something really really ugly?
it's about the end of a relationship and the start of friendship. disguised in something ugly, means he is still in pain because of the break up. so it's about a girl whom he still loves although she is married now. they secretly hang out; some verses sound to me like excerpts from their conversations.
and then he says it "makes him ill" meaning it's a torture for him seeing her knowing he can't have her, so he decides to let it go and advises her to do the same.

this is from his myspace:
"based on a Puerto Rican short story, "There's a Little Colored Boy at the Bottom of the River" about a lonely kid who stares into the river and sees a boy (his own reflection) and thinks its someone at the bottom of the river and he like falls in love with his reflection or whatever and drowns." |

the motivational speach is for her, the girl/woman from the song. she doesn't believe in herself and she's doing all this because of her low self-esteem. why should she change for a guy? so gibbard is actually saying, believe in yourself, and the speach is just putting an emphasis on that.
that's how i see it. |

it's 'dont brush with him'
and i'm pretty sure it's 'steer clear of the grasp girl' or even 'stay clear'. i'm not sure because of his accent.
but grasp makes more sense than grass.. |

yes! i mostly agree with the last explanation. he was hurt by someone else and now he's just being careful with this girl. he warns her that things might not be so perfect as you picture them to be in the beginning of the relationship. and if things go wrong, it might be no one's fault, that's just the way it is with love.
i wouldn't go and analyze the song word by word, some parts can't be taken literally. |

yes, it's definitely connected to Kyle Field! Little Wings have a song "Uncle Kyle Says" and some of the lyrics of the song go something like "we stayed out so late last night, singing through our songs with all our might..."
definitely a connection there.
but this song is amazing. |

i agree. the video doesn't have to be taken too literally. the song is about a girl who feels trapped. in the video she is trapped by her illness, but the song can be interpreted in different ways. i too believe it's about a girl who married a man she doesn't love an is unhappy. |

i see this as a love song. i think he just broke up with a girl he loved who didn't love him back ("When I clung to you there was nothing to hold on tight with"), and now he's just going someplace else hoping he'll forget the pain if he escapes from the memories, wondering what next. he's lost without her. it's a beautiful song. i get the chills when he repeats "What now? What now?" it's so sad. |
