The "Haves and the Have-Nots" is an obvious dig on John Edwards' two-Americas speech. The whole song reeks of Republican arrogance. If it's ironic and tongue-in-cheek, then it's surprising in it's content - at least to me. Trent's not typically about subtlety, or tip-toeing around things. Usually he says what's on his mind directly, and without innuendo. It is possible he tried his hand at sarcasm this time around, but it misses the mark for me as he doesn't seem altogether sympathetic to what would be the alternate (Democratic) viewpoint. Maybe he's taking the cowardly middle route in hopes of appeasing everyone on both sides. That would make him a populist. That's a despicable route to take, though. What is that old adage? If you don't stand for something, you don't stand for anything. "G" is a pretty good multi-purpose initial. Could be George. Could be God, Could be Greed or Government, but these are the least likely since "G" is signing his name. The ambiguity helps him retain his own ambiguity on what he's singing about. "G" is also nice, because it ties into the hip hop music he's always liked ("G" meaning "gangster" in hip hop). |
