| John Denver – Leaving On a Jet Plane Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I used to think this song was pure cheese but I worked in Hong Kong for a few months and a really sad German guy put it the jukebox in a bar about 10 times in a row. Every time I hear it now it reminds me of being apart from my girlfriend sitting in a bar on the other side of the world and it cracks me up every time. | |

I love Meat Loaf and have had this album since the early eighties. Even though i've listened to the song a million times i've never really thought about the lyrics too much - I must admit I thought it was just about a bike crash. Having read them I agree with the posting above and another previous one - to me the first verse is describing the person singing the rest of the song. I think the guy on the bike is the "killer on the blood shot streets". He needs to escape the law and has one last night with his girl. The crash part seems to be him imagining what might happen rather than what actually does. I love the guitar sounding like a motorbike - I was fascinated by it when I was a teenager. |

I think a previous poster is correct about the Lords Prayer. I'm only a few years younger than the band and the Lords Prayer (the version quoted in full earlier) was said at every school assembly/wedding/christening and so on while I was growing up. Anyone in the UK over the age of 35ish can probably remember this prayer off by heart. I'm guessing this is where the line came from. I think the rest of the song is about a condemned criminal questioning his faith. The reference to the Gallows Post probably means 18th/19th century England where criminals were hung publicly |

The backwards bit is Nicko doing an impression of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin (previous poster is correct - something about don't meddle with things etc around backwards messages). Wasn't there a big court case going on around this time around hidden song messages in songs? I seem to remember Judas Priest appearing in court after someone killed themselves listening to one of their records (I may be mis remembering this but I think there was some hysteria at the time). This is what Maiden were referencing I think |

This site is great!!! Only just found it and have enjoyed reading all the Maiden comments. This song is indeed based on the film Village of the Damned which in turn was based on the book The Midwich Cuckoos (by John Wyndham who also wrote The Day of the Triffids). |
