i think the song speaks for itself. if i recall correctly, John Ondrasik is a big sports fan (hence Five For Fighting refering to hockey). i think the song is about himself wanting to be a successful athlete more than a musician, even though he enjoys being one. the thing that's holding him back is he is a much better musician than an athlete. that's why he'd give up his voice, he'd burn his piano, etc. also, if he gave up all the materials of value (car, cash) he would be able to get all that back anyway, because he'd be rich. i also like the theory of it being about obsessive fans. i love how throughout the song, he uses the phrase "my God," but the last time he says it, he says "my God" and then a second name, "my Jordan." God has been replaced by Micahel. very creepy feel with an artistic touch. love it. |

| the song is about a guy (the singer) who is still in love with his ex-girlfriend. she broke up with him, and he had trouble accepting it. but, in order to maintain his pride, he professes to not being in love with her, even though there are hints of her still in his life. the picture on his wall for instance, which he makes up an excuse, saying the only reason he has it still hanging up is to hide a stain. he also makes the comment, "don't ask me to give it back." he is afraid she will as for it to help him get over her, but he says it doens't mean anything to him (so he doesn't look weak), even though it clearly does, because he doesn't want to give it up. the girl repeating "be quiet, big boys don't cry" is him remembering the night of the break up. she was trying to comfort him from the pain and it repeats over and over again in his head. he remembers that she showed compassion towards hims which to him could mean she still felt something--hope for the future. that's why he still holds on, but he also knows he has to appear strong to her to have any chance. otherwise he will look like a weakling to her and she will want nothing to do with him. the reason he tells her no to think she has it made by him calling her. he doesn't want her to see he's desperate for her. | |
