Dexys Midnight Runners – Geno Lyrics 17 years ago
Me too mentalistic. Remember this playing when coincidentally we were 'bunking school' at the age of 10!!

Those lyrics have been a mystery to me ever since: For instance 'the lowest head in the crowd that night' I always thought were 'Jimmy always said it wouldnt be right'!!

Suppose thats a tribute to Kevin Rowlands singing of this fantastic song...Its charm was its mystery cos you never knew what he was singing...Brilliant!!

The Cure – Never Enough Lyrics 17 years ago
I reckon feversomes spot on. It's about a lot of things. Alot about greed, perhaps modern society..People in general are never happy and want more of everything...Probably has a deeper meaning though, when you get that feeling you've got something you used to covet but its still somehow not enough to satisfy the inner you and you just have to keep pushing for more, and thats not just in material things.

The Verve – Space And Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Yes Kevin Kyle, spot on..This relates to me. Recently out of a long term relationship and I've met someone else but there ain't no love there. I live at my house, she lives at hers and we see each other 2 or 3 times a week which is more than enough. We get on and she's nice but there are long periods of silence, like existence is all we share. And she's so cold, I always have to take the lead which she always responds to but she won't take the initiative. I can guarantee that. There'll be no tears cried when it ends and I feel numb towards her. Pretty sure she feels the same towards me too.
Also, the line 'let me sleep tonight' is me when I'm at hers. 'let me sleep at yours tonight cos its better than going home alone'.
Reckon its about a relationship based on physical attraction and nothing else. Some people may think its wrong but it suits us both at this time. Massive song, even more massive album.Mind blowing

Kaiser Chiefs – Love's Not A Competition (But I'm Winning) Lyrics 18 years ago
Wintersfella don't worry your review sums this song up perfectly. I was gonna post but you kinda took the words out of my mouth!

I don't usually listen to the Kaisers. Don't get me wrong, they make perfect pop but it's a bit overplayed. However, this song caught my imagination. It's brilliantly simple and I can relate it to my own situation.

Hope this makes sense: My x girlfriend recently moved out but has since realised this was a mistake on her part, but I can't have her back...She's a controlling character and will never take the blame for anything. So she has turned it into my fault but "the trick is getting her to think that all this was her idea", which it was! There is a massive internal battle of wills going on: she's trying to get back with me and, even tho I still have feelings for her, I can't be having that (i won't be the one to disappoint her anymore).. It's not a competition but I think i'm winning..at the moment, but there is no way of knowing. Love can thump you between the eyes at the most inconvenient moment! Keep you posted.

She was also "keeping score", but not of the altruistic things I did, only the negative.

I agree this could have been written by Morrisey. Simple lyrics but so ambiguous, pure poetry.

Gnarls Barkley – Smiley Faces Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one thought provoking song. Fascinating comments on here and there are so many different interpretations..pure poetry.

Personally I love the bit about the girlfriend, can really relate to that as my (ex) girlfriend bugs me all the time but also loves me all the time. She also has a naturally smiley face and is fundamentally a happy person- one of the hardest things to do. Wish I could be her but i was the one who always 'took a little pain just in case'. Now I feel responsible for making a smiley person unhappy but we're better off apart. This song makes sense of it all somehow. Very positive and feel good but as Tyler said a bit mad, but then so is life. Vicekings comments sum it up very well.

Marillion – Warm Wet Circles Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought it was just about having a great time and laughing at the world until closing time when "the barman wipes away the warm wet circles" and the reality of humdrum life beginning again takes over.

Having read the comments on here theres obviously a lot more too it. Fascinating

Hard-Fi – move on now Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't put this album down at the moment. This is one powerful song. His relationships either just ended or coming to the end and it seems like it was his decision, but he's a bit uncertain about the whole thing....He's seen good times in his home town (Feltham right?) but now his girls going or gone it seems deathly dull and quiet (a deafening silence: sums up a split with someone you loved perfectly)...The only way to escape the memories of the good times (this time last year) and the void in his life is to fly away some place and perhaps make a new life....How do I know all this? Cos this bloke is me but in a different town.

This song breaks my heart and will always remind me of trying to get over my girlfriend of 6 and a half years who has just moved out, but at the same time makes me feel positive too......Like the singer this was my decision and I can remember lots of good times. Its the finality of it all that hits you. Knowing life will never be the same and you won't be as one with that person ever again. Thats when you feel like flying away, but this time round I know its right we're apart.

James – Waltzing Along Lyrics 18 years ago
By the way I learned the above from a friend who's parents split then his mum died of cancer then a young relative got the same, all in a short space of time. Everyone assumed he'd be down for a long time. He was initially but then something changed. He got strong overnight and developed only positive thoughts. Happily his relative recovered and I firmly believe it was because of the positive vibes around her from my mate and his family. People still feel sorry for him but its unwarranted. From the outside people assume he's sad but he's far from it. A true inspiration. He waltzes through life with ease and confidence, hence we should all try to 'waltz along' as per the song title.

I presume the person that wrote the song (Tim Booth??) must have conquered demons of their own at some point as the lyrics could only have been written by somebody who has been through it. To put the words to music such as this shows exceptional talent and somewhere inside there must be a strong desire to help others.

This song is inspirational, perhaps naurally positive and happy people wouldn't understand it. The rest of us should always keep a copy to hand to play whenever those dark clouds appear and the battle between heart and head is about to commence!

Anybody aware of any other positive songs on this subject?

James – Waltzing Along Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song and the tune is upbeat, almost designed to bring people out of depression. My take on it is that Tim is trying to tell us that depression is all in the individuals head...We'll all die in the end whatever we do (all roads lead onto death row etc.) and that we can choose not to succumb to that insidious emotion called depression (may your mind set you free). Basically people get depressed by feeling sorry for themselves and, whatever the circumstance, we can get through anything by choosing not to wallow in self pity and inflicting our miseries on others...The more miserable you are the less people want to be with you and the more lonely you become. Loneliness fuels depression and the circle becomes vicious.

Easier said than done I know but we have to fight the negative side of our minds with our hearts (may your heart lead you on)...So keep an open mind and a strong heart and don't feel sorry for yourself because ultimately the only person to suffer will be you.

This may sound hard but its the only way you can get through a depression...Don't take life too seriously whatever happens to you.

Morrissey – Everyday Is Like Sunday Lyrics 18 years ago
Superb comments on here. Never realised this song had so many connotations.

For me it will always be Southend on a grey, wet winters Sunday. Miserable, depressing, lonely and boring but strangely comforting (belive it or not its actually a nice place). Applicable to any English seaside town on a miserable day.

One of Mozza's greatest.

Marillion – This Town Lyrics 18 years ago
I believe this song is about London?

Think the chorus is appropriate to most towns though..the town you live in shapes your life, or should I say, the people that live there shape your life. Paricularly relevant if you live in one town for most of your life.

Early eighties I broke my arm.The drive to Bath RU Hospital and this was playing. So exciting as, with T4F being from Bath, thought I may get a glimpse of them.Never did!.....This song evokes those memories for me.

Gary Jules version brilliant but will never better the original.

Marillion – The Party Lyrics 18 years ago
Its the morning after song. She's young, its her first party and transforms into her first time getting laid...It was exciting at the time and thats captured in the sights, smells and sounds described here...The next day she's not sure if she likes what happened. That weird feeling you get when you're young thats all part of growing up...Thats not particularly reflected in the lyrics but the tone of the music at the end says it all brilliantly...Tales off thoughtfully and you can imagine this young girls confused emotions at the time...Perhaps the guy forced himself on her?

One of the greatest early eighties tracks. I'm 7 years younger than babyboomer but remember it like yesterday. Can't believe only 1 previous comment!
