I've seen Midas mentioned a lot, but I can't be sure if this has been said (or whether this will be seen) because of the volume of comments. Midas, from my recollection, was a king who had one wish granted, and (because he was so materialistic) that wish was that anything he touched would turn to gold. AHHH, yes, here: "So Midas, king of Lydia, swelled at first with pride when he found he could transform everything he touched to gold; but when he beheld his food grow rigid and his drink harden into golden ice then he understood that this gift was a bane and in his loathing for gold, cursed his prayer" I think he turned his own daughter to gold accidentally (????) and he regretted his decision. He also would have starved to death, clearly. I cannot remember how the story ends. No, to whomever said it, Midas does not represent satan. Jeez. Some people will go to any lengths to find religious references. |

Yeah I found a whistle as thin as a sheet...DEFINITELY made me think "LSD" immediately. Before that I wasn't thinking it at all. A lot of psychedelic users credit psychedelics with relationship breakthroughs/epiphanies, and even with the (sometimes astounding) closeness within their romantic relationships. So maybe psychedelics are the magic mario whistle, as someone said before, that gets them from a bad place into a good one with their partner? WARP WORLD! Heheh. Who knows? They seem to be purposely ambiguous...oh...just all the time. |

"Weekend Warrior" IS common slang for someone who has responsibilities during the week, but gets high/drunk/otherwise smashed on the weekend. That was what I heard when I listened to the song. Anyone who has ever REALLY messed themselves up with drugs can identify with the sort of primal, insane world inhabited while hallucinating and whatnot. A really bad trip FEELS like a post-apocalytic kind of place to be. Responsible people - those who don't just want to be drop out junkies...have to "plan for the weekend wars" VERY carefully to avoid ruining the rest of their lives. That's not to say there isn't more than one meaning. If they have ever used drugs, of course that will color their entire world-view, whether they mean for it to influence their music or not, it does. I giggle a little when people say "but they say The Handshake isn't about drugs!" Yeah, the Beatles swore that "Lucy in the Sky" wasn't about acid, too. It's obviously referencing a selling out experience as well. It's a mark of true genius when a writer can make a song with two or even three or four meanings, all of which fit. |

Why is is suddenly offensive when a woman turns those questions around? Are we NOT supposed to have any need or wants? Are men the only ones who are supposed to matter when it comes to sex? |

| I'm not a fan of Rhianna, I just came here because wondered what a rude boy was, lol. I don't see how this sends young girls a message that is any worse than the rest of the over-sexualized stuff on television/radio. in fact, this is sort of better. At least she is taking control of her own sexuality and owning it...she's doing it for HER, not to please some guy. I understand why guys would prefer the "how can I please you?" porno attitude of most starlets, but as far as young women are concerned, being the master of your own sexual experience is pretty much a good idea. | |

Dude, I think I'd rather my kid hear this song than you calling people women derogatory, vulgar names and referring to their private parts with vulgar, lewd terms. I'm also not sure that a black person talking about another black person qualifies as racism. Certainly no more than if a white woman said "I like french men/British men/southern men." Why are you so angry? It's just a song! It seems that is affected you personally-if so, then apparently it is art after all, since one goal of a work of art is to affect people on a personal level. I think its about getting old; The month "April" represents spring and the prime of her life, she wasn't prepared for it (wore inappropriate clothing) and now, it's over. If you think about it in the context of the song it makes sense. At the end she's looking back, missing being young. |

I think there's definitely a drug reference there...it also reminds me of ecstasy. Maybe that's just my personal experience speaking...but the colors changing, out of a black and whit world...ecstasy is VERY speedy, but with an extra hallucinogenic quality. You understand everything, and the problem i you weren't "loving" enough. you love everyone and everything, and you can't see why there was any problem. And then suddenly, you look around and it's WAY too bright...it's morning, you've been up all night, you have NO tolerance for light or any other kind of stimulation. And you have the feeling that just a minute ago you solved every emotional or relationship problem you ever had, and for some reason you are very, very sad. And you still can't sleep, because the only affect that's left is...the speed. |

If this came from the same time as Boys For Pele...that's the 2nd reference to crocodiles. Not that it necessarily means anything. But I swear, for...how many years? Since Jackie's Strength came out, at least...I've thought she was saying "Beulah land...maybe I don't wanna go where YOU nuts are!" That resonated with me...too bad it's ruined. Well, obviously, if it's from when she was a child, I'm wrong, but... First of all, I was reading this, thinking "WHERE CAN I GET THIS SONG??!!" From the time I was 12 I was obsessed with tori amos. My mother didn't like it all that much. Looking back, from 1996 forward... that was one of the better, more empowering things I could have been listening to. My mother didn't like her because she talked about sexuality and god. For the same reasons I loved her-she questioned these things. I'm a better woman for learning to question. I once read a quote from Tori where she said her mission was just to teach one girl to be her own savior... That's what this made me think of. Many mothers don't want their daughters to be their own saviors - bt it's in the daughter's best interest. |

I may get shot down for this, but on a deeper/archetypal level, I get the feeling that this song is referring to the madonna/whore split in a man's mind, within a relationship. The woman is telling him, "oh no, a woman didn't do this to you, society did and you accepted it, you're lying to yourself because its easier." She's saying " I can be BOTH to you, I'm a woman, a whole woman, both madonna and whore." For instance, "you called it dark but now I'm not so sure." She's saying, "you can trust me with your sexuality, it's not darker or dirtier than mine, I can handle it." I get a different thing from the line "don't believe the lie/your dragon needs slaying..." I think she's saying that the idea that he has to separate his sexuality into good/bad is the lie.He needs to play his "wild card," in a healthy way instead of repressing it. And she can "bring kisses for the beast," again, she can be both mother to him, and feed the beast within. She can be all encompassing. The part about "ancient savageries....it has come to light the gods they have slipped up...ect" Seems to me to be referring to the fact that religion and "gods" have always been the tools that perpetuate this mentality-it sort of flows back to the theme of "devils and gods," in that all of us have both devil and god inside us and to try to seperate them/blame them on an outside force is just an excuse for actions that we feel ashamed of...it's like she's telling this guy "dump the shame, you're safe and you're only hurting others with it..." sort of like "get off the cross we need the wood..." it's a recurring theme on the album, even in the art. At the end, perhaps she's asking him to forgive her for the "lies" he's been fed, since we tend to blame our partners for our own issues...like she's telling him to forgive him for the percieved injustices of other women and trust her, even though she's done no wrong to begin with. Just my opinion :) |
