i was so excited when he released this song! :D i love the lines "You forgot to lock the door, America / Yeah, I've seen you undressed / Is it true what they told me, America? / Cause you were stunning in the flesh" seeing America for what it really is instead of some romantic vision. naked and exposed! the way he described it is great. and i love the 'statue of liberty' bit. "Come on, give me something to die for, America" |

dave is really close to his brother :) i think that there are feelings of confusion and frustration. he's trying to make things right but he can't. Not completely sure what this song is about. He says that he leaves for good, but he also says that he always comes back... |

i've never read the book, but "meet me at the pictures" sounds like the movies. or maybe an art gallery, but my first thought was the movies. once summer comes and i wont be bogged down by school, i totally wanna start reading again. for fun. i havent done leisure reading in the longest time. ive been meaning to get back to it, but Meg and Dia have really made me determined to read again |

| Bob Dylan – With God on Our Side Lyrics | 18 years ago |

well yup seems like an anitwar song to me... sorry i cant elaborate, but could i have some help with a project that i have involving this song please? so we're writing about songs of protest, and this is my song. im having trouble "placing my assigned song in and briefly discussing its historical context". ok ill get info on the wars mentioned in the song and explain how it relates to the meaning of the song.... BUT i also have to mention what was going on when this song was written, what inspired it, etc... political problems... im a bit lost here. it was written around the time the Cold War was a big problem, right? help please, if you could advise me. what would be good to research and mention? |

| Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i interpret this song in two ways. (no Christianity or global warming in it for me). one is pessimistic and the other is optimistic. INTERPRETATION ONE. transcendentalism. this guy is looking back, wondering if he's done any good with his life (what was really so special about me?). self-reflection. kinda like "if you were to die right now, would you be able to look back on your life and honestly believe that you made the best of it" there's also that part: I sat down on the street and took a look at myself, said, "Where you going, man? You know the world is headed for Hell. Say your goodbyes if you've got someone you can say goodbye to." you can see the self-reflection again (took a look at myself). the world is gonna end, you're gonna die. what do you have to show? also, you have to realize what's really important. some people spend their whole lives trying to make money or whatever. the "unimportant" stuff. and they lose touch with their loved ones. this verse makes me think about that. does this guy have anyone to say goodbye to anymore? or did he mess up his relationships with them? he's loking back, wondering if he's done the right thing with his life. INTERPRETATION TWO. when i first heard the song, i thought it was very "feel good". i thought it had a more positive outlook on people. im used to hearing about corruption and the sad things in life XD that's before i read the lyrics. and as for the vid... i love the clips. it goes with my first thoughts on the song. a more positive feeling. that people are not completely horrible. we've done some great things too. we've come a long way. sorry for being a bit sloppy. i'm not being graded for this, so i wasnt too carefull... i didnt read all the comments, my points may have been made already. my apologies :] |

| The Meg And Dia Band – Roses Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
wow i never thought about drugs when i listened to this song, but i guess that i can see it now. i always thought that it was about a boy using a girl, and then the girl realizes that he never really loved her. In that first verse she talks about fake people. then there's that part that goes "I don't even know you/You won't even know I'm gone/Was it something I did wrong?". i figured that she doesnt know him anymore because he's not what she thought he was. He didnt really love her or care (he wouldnt notice if she was gone). And then the "was it something i did wrong" is something a girl would typically think if a guy she was crazy about just left her for no apparent reason (he left because he got what he wanted). and then the "Roses, roses cold/ Roses, roses sold out". Roses are supposed to be about love, but the love the girl thought she had was cold. it wasn't real. the boy just sold her out. "Turn around reds and whites again..." and that whole verse does support my guess about it being a boy taking advantage of a girl. "Why are some girls so naive? He didn't unbutton your blouse to see a better view of your heart"... im not sure about the first 2 lines though... and lastly "sing it soft/ make it slow/ apples parachute the boys back down/ fill it up, overflow/ a new, improved, modern way to feel". i have trouble with this verse XD maybe "apples" means being sweet...filling up with joy, but then it becomes overwhelming... LOL i dunno im just guessing here. i think i read someone commenting that "apples" meant like "ass". so yeah that's kinda how i always felt about the song. the drugs thing fits too... but i like the thought of it being about a broken heart |

haha john mayer....i love you so much. for me, this song is about getting rid of insecurities and self hate and realizing that you can be more. about growing and improving and knowing that you will be great, even if no one else can see it. i really like the video for this too, how everyone passes him and doesnt realize that he's the one making the music. no one sees how great he was. i kinda dont understand the verses though |

i think purevolume & myspace categorizes them as "powerpop". their music is the first that ive ever heard of "powerpop". i think that the chorus to this song is adorable...especially since it's summer vacation right now and i miss someone badly |

| i had the same thoughts as keepitquiet. ya i think the song's about boredom, and then she commits suicide. she feels the mortality | |
