Interpol – The Heinrich Maneuver Lyrics 18 years ago
An idea on The Heinrich Maneuver...

obviously a play on words of the heimlich maneuver...

Heinrich Himmler was a powerful Nazi who was known for annihilating those he deemed unworthy. The guy in this song feels as the more he talks to this beautiful goddess of a woman, he feels more and more unworthy of himself. As she continues her life perfectly independent and stylish, he feels worthless to her, he feels like nothing, and every moment he speaks to her he feels those mixed feelings of loving her, but also feeling worth nothing to her.

The act of talking to her is the heinrich maneuver.

I'm sorry if that sounds completely inane, but it was the only thing I could come up with.

Either that, or yeah, he was once in a relationship with her and it turned out sour. She moved far away from him and she has moved on (the new shoes idea), but he still admires her and is having trouble moving on himself... still talks to her online, asks her how she's doing, and it hurts him when he reads her thoughts... because he still wants her, but at the same time knows that it would be a mistake to get back with her again

I really want to know why this song is titled what it is... hmm.

Everytime I've heard this song, I think of an Internet relationship. "How are things on the West Coast? I hear you're doing real fine..."

"You wear those shoes like a dove". She is very graceful. He admires her poise, the way she moves, her style.

He wants her, but he knows he can't pursue her... not only is she far away, but she is out of his league... he doesn't want to just be another guy (I don't want a piece of history)...

He has all these plans for them to be together and have a great time, but he knows how it would turn out... either she would turn him down completely because she is so much better than he is or he would end up being used or humiliated

He really has feelings for her, but he is having second thoughts (Today my heart swings) He knows the truth and part of him just wants to get away... so he doesn't want to read her thoughts anymore... because it would just make him realize the truth and he'd feel bad

Interpol – Pioneer to the Falls Lyrics 18 years ago
I saw Interpol in concert... and they do say "leaks", not "leaves".

This song is absolutely amazing. It really makes me feel a lot inside. And I really do think I understand the feeling this song is trying to convey.

I agree a lot with what Comedian was saying, only I think that this song has a direct meaning to death, not a relationship.

This song fits perfectly with how I felt the first time someone close to me died. When I was 15, my boyfriend died, and I had that feeling where I didn't really know how to feel, as if it was unreal. I had to sit at his grave for a while before I really felt any connection with anything at all. ("Show me the dirt pile and I will pray that the soul can take three stowaways")

At the same time, I felt a loss of faith, not knowing how to feel, but felt his soul around me. ("The soul can wait..." ... "I felt you so much today..." etc.)

The title Pioneer to the Falls seems to me like it means that it is the first time someone has felt the effects of a death. The "falls" might be another way to describe plunge into depression one has after someone they love dies.

"In a passion, it broke; I pull the black from the grey..." This is when the 'unreal' feeling breaks and someone is overwhelmed with the passion of feeling the dead loved one's soul... and then the sinking into a depression (black) from the neutral feeling (gray) that they once felt before.

I could analyze every line of this song, but what I put above is the main idea of what I think the song means...

Just an amazing song... Interpol has done it yet again...
