Most of Missy Higgins songs are pretty clear on the first time I listen to them. Or maybe it's just that I make my own interpretations pretty quickly. This one to me is about a girl who has made a cover around herself, denying help from others, refusing to let them see what she feels. It sounds like a girl is lashing out at anyone who is offering help. She feels like she's on show to the world, like she's being judged. Though she shows her anger to hide her own misery and loneliness, it's as though people can see through her disguise despite her desperate efforts. There is a hint that she's stuck in one place and she's frustrated. Maybe she's hasn't let go of something, or hasn't gotten over it whilst everyone else is moving on or has delt with it. It is not about a mental illness. It's a feeling that a lot of people expirience. |
