The Killers – Mr. Brightside Lyrics 16 years ago
I'll admit right here that I don't have an explanation for every line in the song, but this is my favorite personal interpretation.

I picture a high school/college student aged young man who's been pretty antisocial for the good majority of his life. He's recently begun to socially include himself and it's been working out (Coming out of my cage and I've been doing just fine), he's probably made several new friends and has a higher self esteem. In particular, he's met a girl which probably matches his definition of "perfect". He starts to spend more time with her and at one point gets an opportunity to kiss her. He takes his chance, and perhaps she turns him away right there or awkwardly goes along with it, but in any case he learns she already has a man whom she is deeply in love with. This breaks the subject's heart, he tries to trick himself into thinking it "was only a kiss" and completely harmless. He can barely get to sleep and his dreams are invaded by visions of the girl and her "real" boyfriend. He starts to notice the girl and her lover around town or school and it fills him with jealousy and anger, despite the fact that it would be otherwise completely acceptable. And yet he is still convinced he is destined to be with this girl, but can do nothing about it, so he sits back and tries to keep up a false optimistic attitude (cause I'm Mr. Brightside)
